Ward Is Inducted Lily Nicole Ward of Holdcn Beach has been inducted into the St. Andrews Honor Society at St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Launnburg. The society honors juniors and se niors who have at least a 3.5 cumu lative gradepoint average. Attends Leadership Event Heather Heavcncr, a rising eighth grade student at Shallottc Mid dle School, re cently attended the Broyhill Leadership Conference at Pfciffcr College in Misenheimcr. She was one of some 90 mid dle and high school students to participate in the June 10-14 seminars for state voca tional club officers. Heather is sec ond vice president of the State CEC NC Vocational Club. Topics ad dressed included communication, self-esteem, leadership skills and parliamentary procedure. She was accompanied by Lois Morgan, Career Club advisor at Shallotte Middle School and Heath er's local advisor. In August Heather will attend a week-long Vocational Teachers Conference in Raleigh, where she will serve as a page. Completes Training Brunswick County native Josie Brown of the Fayettcvillc Police Depart ment completed the criminal in vestigation pro gram of the N.C. Justice Academy in Salcmburg, the first officer ?KmVN from Cumber land County to do so since the pro gram begain in 1987. Course topics included investigation of child sexu al abuse and neglect. A graduate of Methodist College, she completed the N.C. Basic Law Enforcement training at Fayctteville Technical Community College and completed active military service in 1985 as a captain. Inman Attends Institute Justin Inman of Route 2, Supply, attended the Institute for Fut ure Agricultural Leaders June 15-19 at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. Sponsored by NCSU's Agri INMAN cultural Educ ation Program and the North Carolina Farm Bureau Federation, the institute is designed to acquaint high school seniors with career opportunities in agriculture and life sciences and to develop their leadership skills. A rising senior at West Bruns wick High School, Inman is the son of Alan Robinson. Completes Basic Training U.S. Navy Seaman Recruit Philip P. Brooks, son of Samuel P. Brooks of Lcland, recently completed basic training at Navy Recruit Training Command in Great Lakes, 111. Brooks is a 1990 graduate of North Brunswick High School who joined the Navy last January. Navy basic training includes gen eral military subjects designed to prepare recruits for further academic and on-the-job training in one of 85 occupational fields. Studies include seamanship, close-order drill, naval history and first aid. Graduates From Salem Amy Michelle Hewelt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mack L. Hewelt of Shallotte, was among 140 students awarded degrees at Salem College in Winston-Salem May 23. Ms. Hewelt rcccivcd a bachelor of music degree with a major in mu sic education. She also was honored with the June Louise Samson Award for academic excellence in the field of music. On WCU Dean's List Jeffrey Joseph Hilts of Lcland is among 751 students named to the spring semester dean's list at Western Carolina University at Cullowhcc. To qualify for the list, he had to achieve at least a 3.5 gradepoint av erage on a 4.0 scale on regular courscwork of at least 12 hours, ex cluding remedial courses, with no grades of D or F.
