35 Brunswick County Students Make UNC-W Dean's List
Thirty-five students from Bruns
wick County were named to the
dean's list for the 1992 spring se
mester at the University of North
Carolina at Wilmington.
To make the dean's list, students
taking 15 hours of classes or more
more must earn a grade point aver
age of 3.2 or better with no grade
less than B. Students taking 12 to 14
hours classes must earn GPA of
3.5 or better with no grade less than
B.

Agents Earn Awards

V. Barkley and Sandra Maddox,
area representatives of the N.C.
Cooperative Extension Service,
have won top entry awards through
the state and national Association of
County Agricultural Agents.
The three worked together to de
velop a training curriculum for the
N.C. Association of Nurseryman's
Certified Plantsman program.
They earned first piace in the turf
grass and horticulture communica
tions program in a statewide contest.

The three agents also won first
place for their work in the 13-state
southern rccion cf the National
Association of County Agricultural

School this fall, was nominated for

U.S. Marine Pvt. Paul Downs 11,
son of Mrs. Irene Dixon of Bolivia,
giaduated June 19 from recruit train
ing at the Marine Corps Recruit
Depot at Parris Island, S.C.
A 1988 graduate of South Bruns
wick High School, Downs will at
tend Marine combat training at
Camp Geiger and is scheduled to re
port to Camp Lejeunc for training as
an administrative specialist.

Alvin Hewett Jr., son of Joyce

North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Bell
is pursuing a master's degree in en
vironmental urban and regional
planning. He is the son of Bertha
Bell and grandson of Annie R.

Hodges Elected
Sabrina Hodges, director of
Southeastern Welcome Center Inc.
in Shallottc was recently elected
secretary of the 1-40 Association.
The Southport resident is one of
two Brunswick County representa
tives on the association board. The
other is Annette Odom of Sunset
Beach.
The association was created fol
lowing a two-year study that fo
cused on the economic impact of the
corridor on the region. It represents
10 counties along the stretch of 1-40
that runs from Raleigh to
Wilmington.

Corpsman Donald Ray Moses re
ceived certificates from the State of
North Carolina and New Hanover
County at a dinner held recently at
Fort Fisher in honor of those who
made outstanding efforts during the

drill held last month. The dinner was
sponsored by emergency manage
mcnt officials at the National Guard
Training Center.
Unit Cited
Staff SgL Michacl W. King is a
member of the 26th Forward Sup
port Battalion that received the Val
orous Unit Citation.
The citation was awarded for ex
ceptionally meritorious service dur
ing offensive operations against the
Iraqi Republican Guard Forces
Command during Operation Desert
Jtorm.
King, a maintenance supervisor,
is the son of Rufus and Sally King
of Route 5, Southport. He is a 1982
graduate of South Brunswick High
School.
Completes Training
Marine Private Paul E. Downs,
son of Irene M. Dixon of Bolivia,
recently completed recruit training
at the Marine Corps Training Depot,
Parris Island, S.C.
Downs, a 1988 graduate of South
Brunswick High School, joined the
Marines in March 1992.
Earwood Nominated
James M. "Marty" Earwood of
Shallotte has been nominated a sec
ond time for inclusion in Who's
Who Among American High School
Students.
His student achievements for
1991-92 will be included in the next
edition of the yearbook.
A rising senior, he is a member of
the Trojan baseball and wrestling
teams and the Latin Club, and has
had perfect school attendance for
two years. He also won second place
two consecutive years in the
Brunswick Community College an
nual accounting competition.
He is the son of Jim and Peggy
Earwood of Highmcadows Road,
Shallotte.

Two On EMC Tour
Two high school juniors from
Brunswick County participated in a
week-long trip to Washington, D.C.,
as members of the 1992 Rural
Electric Youth Tour June 13-19.
Jamila Eagles of Southport and
Wendy llypcs of Leland were
among four students representing
Brunswick Electric Membership
Corp. The two wrote winning essays
based on interviews with someone
who could remember the time be

On the trip students took port in
education sessions, met with legisla
tors, toured points of interest. T1k
state delegation also operated its
own "soda pop co-op" to supply
themselves with soft drinks during
trip while learning the co-op concept
first-hand.

Juvenile cases involve abuse, ne

ning away from home, truancy and
termination of parental rights.
