Longwood Sees Man y Changes (Continued From Page 1-B) "But the community didn't die," Bennett said. The stores stayed open and Jackson Brothers sold the cleared acreage for farmland. Residents built Longwood Baptist Church in the 1940s, and then built again, with the earlier sanctuary go ing to Mi. Zion Baptist Church. In the 1950s, Geneva Boyd's Long wood Grill was a popular hangout for teen-agers. A widow named Fanny Rhodes moved into the one-room millhousc over the mill at Butler's Pond. "You had to cross on a plank over the mill run to enter her room," re called Mrs. Bennett, who visited there as a child. "You could just hear it roar and roar." "She was a little old tiny lady," Mrs. Bennett recalled. "All she did was fish; that was her life. She was content." These days the mill house is only a memory and the sawmill is long closed. Downtown Longwood has seen better days, as many of the rur al community's young people have left to seek jobs elsewhere. Just the millworkers' cottages ? sorry? trirn ?nd nthm tnm bling down in neglect ? hint at the impact Jackson Brothers once had on this community. Reed's Country Store and the Activity Book For Kids Targets Waterway Litter "Splish splash, we were picking up trash, that washed up on the shore of a lake..." So begins a new children's song set to the tunc of the '50s rock song, "Splish Splash". The song is among a dozen activities published in Splish Splash , a new educational manual from the Big Sweep Edu cation Committee designed to teach children about the problem of litter in aquatic and marine habitats. The 44-page booklet is a sequel to Ripples: A Big Sweep Elementary Activity Guide, a booklet geared to 9- to 1 1 -year-olds. Splish Splash is for youngsters in kindergarten through second grade and includes activities about recycling, animal entanglement, plastics and other throwaways, and keeping waterways clean. It includes word finds, stories, songs, puzzles, relay games and fin ger puppets, incorporating art, lan giuigC ami SCiCiiCC. "Splish Splash is a great educa tional resource for the preschool ed ucator and the primary school edu cator, both in formal and informal settings," says Lundie Spence, UNC Sea Grants marine education spe cialist and executive chairman of this year's Big Sweep. Manuals are available free to North Carolina educators. To order a copy for your child's teacher, or if you are a teacher or group leader in a formal or non-for mal setting from classroom to Girl Scout or 4-H group ? you can re ceive a free copy of Splish Spiash by sending $1 per booklet (for postage and handling) to Big Sweep Educ ational Materials, P.O. But the community clings to life; in 1984 there were even lengthy dis cussions about incorporation. Diagonally across from Reed's, Rochelle Patterson is renovating the old D.S. Gore store, into a game room. And farther out N.C. 904 in either direction, new businesses are springing up. Mushrooms: Safer To Grow Your Own I have friends who pick and eat wild mushrooms. I also have friends who like "bungee jumping". Al though I do not care for either hob by, I am certain "bungee jumping" is the safer of the two. The practice of eating wild mush rooms is quite common in F.umne and other parts of the world. How ever, many mushrooms species oc cur in North America that are quite poisonous. Small fragments of some Amanita species, like the "Destroy ing Angel" ( Amanita verna), cause certain death. If you are a mushroom hunter, then be very careful or start your own cultivated mushroom gar den.' The two most popular mushrooms in the world, in terms of production and consumption, are the common button mushroom ( Agaric us spp) and the Shiitake or black forest mushroom ( Le minus edodes). Ev eryone is familiar with the common button musiiioom but only mush room connoisseurs know the Shi itake. Shiitake, meaning "mushroom of the shii or oak tree" in Japanese, arc highly prized in the Orient for their flavor and their medicinal value. However, in recent years shiitake mushrooms have been gaining in popularity in the U.S. 1 have seen shiitake mushrooms in grocery stores in coastal North Carolina on THE PLANT DOCTOR C.BRUCE WILLIAMS Extension Area Turf Specialist J i / several occasions. For individuals interested in hob by production, growing shiitake mushrooms can be quite rewarding and much safer than harvesting from the wild. These mushrooms grow best on red or white oak logs. Selection of the proper logs is criti cal. Logs from healthy trees that arc 3 feet to 4 feet long and 3 inches to 8 inchcs thick arc easiest to handle. Once you have your logs selected for your mushroom garden, you are now ready to "plant" mushroom spawn. Shiitake spawn must be pur chased from one of several compa nies in the U.S. that specialize in mushroom production. Spawn is available in two forms ? sawdust and dowels. These arc inoculated with the fungus by the supplier and arc usually ready to use when you receive them. Once your logs arc in oculated with spawn, logs must have good air circulation and proper hu midily for optimum fungus develop ment. This may require you to soak logs and/or cover with burlap to maintain good log moisture. Fruiting of shiitake occurs natu rally with time. The fungus spawn slowly spreads its white mycelium throughout the log. When the logs are thoroughly penetrated by the fungus and the conditions arc just right, you can harvest your mush room garden. The first mushrooms can normal ly be harvested from six months to 12 months after inoculation. The log may continue to produce for up to five years. Experts tell me that a good 4 foot log vf ill produce more than four pounds 0f mushrooms dur ing its productive jiife. It mushroom / gardening sounds like fun to you, Ahcn plan on doing some homework. There is a lot of information \haf should be reviewed before starting up your mushroom garden. A good place to start is with the publication Growing Shiitake Mushrooms by Jeanine Davis, Ph.D. This N.C. State University Co operative Extension publication cov ers all the basic? of shiitake mush room gardening. It is available from your local N.C. Cooperative Ex tension Service office or by sending me a SASE. Send your gardening questions or comments to The Plant Doctor, P.O. Box 109. Bolivia. N.C. 28422. Ground 5 Lb.
