Band Teacher In Critical Condition Followina Wreck A local band tcacher was in criti cal condition Tuesday following a two-truck accident at Ash last Wed nesday evening, Dec. 9. James Wilson Furr, 50, of ShaHctte !o"frVrrw> KanH ipnrhor Shallotte Middle School, was trans ported Wednesday night to The Brunswick Hospital with serious, in capacitating injuries and later trans ferred to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington. His condition remained critical Tuesday morning, according to hospital spokesman Iris Baker. According to Trooper J.V. Dove's report, Furr was eastbound on N.C. 130 about 10 miles west of Shallotte near the Longwood Road intersec tion, driving a 1981 Datsun pickup, when Michael Dean Long, 16, dri ving a 1982 Toyota pickup, made a left turn off N.C. 130 onto Long wood Road (S.R. 1321), failing to yield the right of way. The accident happened around 5:30 p.m. Long, who was not injured, was cited for a safe movement violation and Furr for having no lights. Long told Dove he did not see lights on Furr's truck. Damages to the Long truck were estimated at 53,000 and to the Fun truck, S2.000. Long was wearing lap and shoul der belts; it was not possible to de termine if Furr was wearing belts at the time of the accident, the report indicated. Three persons were seriously in jured last Thursday, Dec. 10, in an accident near Calabash when a dri ver failed to yield the right of way to an oncoming vchcle. The accident happened around 6:10 p.m. 1.5 miles of Calabash on Thomasboro Road (S.R. 1 165) at its intersection with Clariday Road (S.R. 1164). Ruth Louise Combs, 71, of pqlahflch soisthboiir.d in 2 Chevrolet, turned left from Clariday Road onto Thomasboro Road into the path of a 1983 Ford operated by Carrie Atterberry Pennell, 25, whose address the Highway Patrol did not provide. Combs was charged by Trooper J.V. Dove with failure to yield the right of way. Combs, Pennell, and a passenger in Penncll's car, Bonnie Evans, 42, were transported to The Brunswick Hospital with what appeared to b<; serious, incapacitating injuries. Damages to the Combs vehicle were estimated at S2,500, and to the Pennell car, S3, 000. Later Thursday, five persons were injured in a one-car accident that oc curred at 11:15 p.m. about 4.8 mniles south of Belville on N.C. 133. Driver Barrie Campbell, 19, of Southport was charged by Trooper R.L. Murray with driving while im paired. Traveling north on N.C. 133, Campbell's 1982 Ford ran off the road on the left side and overturned. Campbell was transported to New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington with serious, non-in capacitating injuries. Also transport ed were the four passengers in the vehicle, all of whom complained of injuries. A driver was seriously injured in a single-car accident that occurred Dec. 12 around 1 1 p.m. 3.25 miles northwest of Sandy Creek Acres on North Wfd Rnart d R J41Q^ - ? ? \? - - - / Roscoc Everett, 58, of Delco, was transported to New Hanover Reg ional Medical Center in Wilmington with serious, incapacitating injuries. Everett was cast bound on North West Road, navigating a right hand curve, when his 1979 Chevrolet ran off the left shoulder and struck three trees. The driver told the investigating officer. Trooper D.A. Lewis, that he didn't know what happened. Everett was charged with driving left of cen ter. Damage to the Chevrolet were es timated at S600. A Calabash man was not injured Dec. 10 when another vehicle struck his 1992 Toyota in the rear in an ac cident that occurred around 1:45 p.m. in Calabash on N.C. 179 at its intersection with Calabash Road (SR. 1 168). According to Trooper B.L. Wilkes' report, Charles Hargrcaves, 68, was northbound on N.C. 179 when he stopped, waiting to make a left turn onto Calabash Road (S.R. 1 168). His Toyota was struck in the rear by a 1990 Mazda operated by Kimberly Jones, 32, of Sunset Beach. Damage to each vehicle was esti mated at S3, 000. While Jones complained of in juries and was nans ported to The Brunswick Hospital, neither Har grcaves nor a passenger in his vehi cle were injured. Wilkes charged Jones with failure to reduce speed.
