PEOPLE IN THE NEWS King To Attend State Farm Seminar Whitney King of Ash has been selected to at tend the State 1993 Master Farm Manage ment Seminar in ? IM Raleigh Jan. 24 ' 'm 29. The one week program, conducted by the N.C. Depart K,NC ment of Agri cultural and Resource Economics at N.C. State University, is designed to enhance the financial management skills of North Carolina farmers. The program is funded hv a grant from the six Farm Credit Asso ciations in North Carolina. King will be sponsored by Cape Fear Farm Credit of Brunswick County, which will pay for his lodging, meals and educational materials. King will participate in lectures, individual and group problem-solv ing exercises and computer laborato ry instruction by Cooperative Extension Specialists trained in eco nomics, business and finance. "Participants will study how to develop accurate financial state ments to help them understand and analyze their business from a finan cial perspective," said Brunswick County Extension Director Milton Coleman. 'They will also examine good record keeping systems and gain some hands-on experience with micro-computer applications to farm management." The Master Farm Management Seminar is designed to help farmers recognize, the financial challenges of modem agriculture and how to com bine production with accurate finan cial information, business knowl edge and understanding of economic factors, Coleman said. "Past financial difficulties experi enced by farmers during the 1980s have magnified the importance of treating a farm operation as a full Hedged business," he said. On Meredith Dean's List Two Brunswick County students have been named to the dean's list for the fall 1992 semester at Meredith College. They arc Susan Monique Finley, daughter of Dennis and Ruth Finley of Southport, and Lenora Michele Lewis, d.-inithier of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Bridger of Long Beach. For a student to be named to the dean's list, she mast have a semester grade of at least 3.2 out of a possible 4.0 and must have completed a min imum of 12 semester hours and passed all courses taken at Meredith. Promoted To Seaman Coast Guard Seaman Marion E. Holden, son of Grovcr H. Holdcn of Route 2, Supply, was recently pro moted to his present rank while serving aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Spencer, homeported in Bos ton. The 1986 graduate of West WARREN Brunswick High School joined the Coast Guard in June 1991. Named Assistant DA Shallottc lawyer Marion Warren, a native of Ash, has been named assistant district attorney for the 13th Judicial District. Appointed by District Attor ney Rex Gore, Warren took the oath of office in Soulhport Jan. 1 following a swearing-in ceremony for Attorney General Mike Easlcy. After an orientation under the su pervision of Assistant District Attorney Lee Bollinger, Wan-en will begin a four-month rotation in Bladen County, where he will prose cute cases in district court. Warren is also a member of the Brunswick County Planning Board. Cited For Good Conduct Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class James M. Bollinger recently re ceived the Good Conduct Medal. Bollinger is ihe son of Patricia L. Branch of Lcland. The medal recognizes the scrvicc member's "honest and faithful scr vicc" during a four-year period, ac cording to a Navy news release. To cam it, Bollinger achieved and maintained a satisfactory level of performance and an unblemished conduct record for the entire period. He is currently assigned with Strike Fighter Squadron 83, Naval Air Station Cecil Field, Florida. He joined the Navy in August 1988.
