Calabash Man To Head PGA Director's Group i James P. Hart Jr. of Calabash has been elected chairman of the PGA of America's Section Execu live Director Gioiip. _ v. Hart, execu tive director ol the Carolines . PGA Section, was named to the post at a re cent conference ' of the PGA's HAKT executive directors in Orlando, Fla. He will serve a two-year term. Each of the PGA's 41 geographic sections employs an executive direc tor. As chairman. Hart will function aS a liaison wiiii lite PGA of America officers and staff, accord ing to a news release. "On behalf of our 1,6(X) PGA members and apprentices in the Carolinas Section, we're delighted and proud of Jim," said Carolinas PGA President Will Mann. "We're honored that all the sec tions in the PGA will be rcprese ltcd by our director," Maim said. "Jim has been recognized as one of the out standing administrators in golf, and we're confident he will do as gtxxi a job nationally representing the 41 sections as he does with our section." PGA of America President Gary Schaal said it was "a marvelous choicc for Jim to represent the asso ciation on this level." "This was not a popularity contest but recognition of the best person for the job," Schaal added. "Jim will bring a new level of awareness to the executive director's board. I'm happy for Jim, and this is great for the PGA and an honor for the Myrtle Beach area." Hart has been employed by the Carolinas PGA Section, headquar ieied in North Myrtle Bcach, S.C., since 1981. He took over as execu tive director in January 1986. The Carol inas Section is currently the largest of the PGA's 41 sections with more than 1,6(X) professional members. Hart resides in Carolina Shores North with his wife, Mary, and their children Katie, Jimmy, Charlie and Anna. Two Advance In Hoop Shoot Two Brunswick County youngsters have advanced to the state finals of the Elks Hoop Shoot Contest to be held Feb. 20 in Gaslonia. Deautry Daniels and Landis Moody won their age divisions at the Eastern N.C. District Hoop Shoot Saturday in Wilmington. Daniels, a student at Waccamaw Elementary School, made 21 of 25 free throws to win the boys 10-11 division. Moody made 22 of 25 foul shots to win the boys 12-13 class. He at tends Shallotte Middle School. Both local kids qualified for the district competition by winning their age divisions at the local Elks Hoop Shoot held Jan. 23 at Wac camaw School. It was sponsored by Calabash Elks Lodge No. 2679. At last year's state finals, Daniels made 22 of 25 free throws to win the championship in the boys 10-11 division. The building features a concession stand on the ground level and press box and conference room upstairs. When completed, Trojan Coach Mike Alderson said the press box will be the nicest in the Waccamaw 2-A Conference. BOWLING ROUNDUP Inman, Evans Lead Woodmen Leaaue Shclton Inman and Waddell Evans were the top men bowlers Friday in the Woodmen of the World League at Brunswick County Bow ling Center in Shallotte. Inman had the high game of 230 and high handicap series of 692, while Evans rolled the high scratch series of 612. Inman also had a 611 scratch scries and Evans posted a 225 high game and 684 handicap series. Other top finishers Friday night ? included Steve Reynolds with a 204 game, 538 scratch and 625 handicap and Lloyd Fields with a 217 game and 646 handicap series. Also posting high series scores were James Heweu, 541 scratch and 622 handicap; Sieve Clemmons, 521, 602; Jim Ramsey. 518, 614; Jimmy Robinson, 517, 610; and Michael Russ, 513,612. Butch Lastcr had a 511 scratch scries. Other high handicap series scores included Lee Sellers, 621; Jay White, 617; and Kenny Holden, 603. Brunswick Belles F.Ike Grabowski rolled high games of 204 and 193, a 542 scratch series and 677 handicap se ries to lead the Brunswick Belles League last Wednesday. Marian Monaghan had a 181 high game and 475 scratch scries. Pat Formyduval posted a high game of 179. Other high series scores included Carol Vealey with a 474 scratch and Dot Way land with a 629 handicap. State Of Confusion Jcanettc Sabiston bowled a 256 game, 571 scratch scries and 652 handicap series last Wednesday in the State of Confusion League. Other top women included Debbie Cumbee with a 194 game, 504 scratch and 645 handicap. Karen Moshoures had a 178 game and 523 scratch series and Mimi O'Sullivan rolled a 193 game and 502 scratch. Nancy Forrest had a 182 game and 657 handicap series and Linda Gussford rolled a 175 game and 661 handicap. Lois Ramsey had a 175 game, Lynn Ford rolled a 644 hand icap series and Kayc Zitile posted a 638 handicap series. On the men's side, top finishers included Doug Scott with a 215 game, 590 scratch scries and 653 handicap series, and Michael Russ with a 220 game, 527 scratch and 632 handicap. Other scratch series scores in cluded Myron Cumbee with 511 and Lee Harris with 507. Posting high handicap series scores were Ryan Mattingly with 670 and Kenny Holden with 605. Worlcy. Closcsi-to-thc-pin winners were Errickson at the third hole, Meader at the eighth, John Romero at the 12th and Rod Manifold at the 16th. In other golf news, Carolina Shores member Bill Haupt recorded his fourth career hole in one Sat urday while playing the Osprcy Point course on Kiawah Island, S.C. The 75-year-old Haupt hit a nine iron on the 124-yard 15th hole. Playing partners were Bern Distler, Bob Flaccavento and Art Searby. Visitor Aces 14th At Olde Fort Club After 40 years of golf, Joseph S. Cassaro of Schenectady, N.Y., made his first hole in one last Thursday at Olde Fort Golf Club in Winnabow. Cassaro aced the par three, 131 yard 14th hole using an 8-iron to highlight his round of 89. He was playing with John Monty, also of Schenectady, who owns a home in the Shallotte area. Jerry Belcher also witnessed the ace. Monty said the golfers were hit ting into the sun and didn't see the ball fall into the hole. After search ing behind the green for 10 minutes, they found the ball in the cup. State Places Ban On Shark Finning The N.C. Division of Marine Fisheries has imposed restrictions on the finning of sharks, which is the removal of fins and discarding of carcasses. A state proclamation issued Mon day makes it illegal to possess shark fins aboard a vessel or land fins without shark carcasses. The new regulation also prohibits the possession of fins constituting more than 7 percent by weight of any shark harvest. Licensed fish dealers are required to keep records of all sharks landed at their facilities. The regulations do not apply to dogfish sharks.
