For Establishing Your Home Lawn Getting your home lawn estab lished will cost you time and money. Just how much money or time de pends on the method you choosc. Most lawns can be established by seeding or vegetative planting (eg. sprigging, stoloni/.ing, plugging or sodding). The warm season grasses arc especially v.cll-adaptcd to vege tative propagation because of their sod-forming growth habit, vigorous vegetative growth and the ability of plant stems to quickly root. Many desirable warm season law n grasses have an extended seed germination time, poor seedling survival or high establishment irrigation costs that can make installing a lawn quite ex pensive and time consuming. The fastest way to establish a nice lawn is to sod. Sodding is expensive but not always the most costly. I routinely talk to individuals who could have saved hundreds of dol lars and years of lime by sodding their lawn. Some people I know have spent five or more years seed ing, watering, fertilizing and manag ing a non-existent lawn. The cost failing to establish a lawn for five years will exceed the original cost of sod and installation, very sandy, drought prone, or highly crodiblc soils may be more economically sodded than seeded when all envi ronmental and economic factors are considered. On slopes or around ponds, sod will give immediate ero sion control and can save you time and money in re-grading costs. Seeding is the least expensive type of lawn to install. Centipede grass, common bcrmuda grass, bahia grass, and carpet grass can be THE PLANT DOCTOR C. BRUCK WILLIAMS Extension Area Turf Specialist n seeded. Seed companies will soon release new seeded varieties of zoysia grass and Si. Augusiinc grass. Although many people might disagree, the cost of seed on a "per lawn" basis of a warm season grass is similar to that incurred for a cool season grass. Carpet grass seed is the fastest germinating followed by "hulled" common bermuda grass, bahia grass and ccniipcdc grass. Carpel grass w ill easily establish in one grow ing season under optimum soil and weather conditions. Beware that car pel grass is very prone to be killed by winter temperatures even in coastal areas. Centipede grass will often take two weeks to four weeks to germi nate. Seedlings arc very small and prone to diseases, insects or desicca tion. A properly watered and man aged centipede grass lawn will often take two or three years to form a dense, healthy stand of turf if grown from seed. Sprigging, stolonizing, or plug ging arc intermediate in cost and es tablishment time when compared to Head Start Recruiting Children For Program Head Stan is recruiting Brunswick 287-3637; or County children who will be ages 3 ?Cediir Grove Head Start Center, and 4 by Oct 16 to participate in the State Road 1125, Supply NC 28462, federally funded program. 842-6363. These methods can create a healthy dense turf grass for any warm season grass in one growing season if properly man aged. For the patient and hardwork ing homeowner, sprigging, plugging or stolon izing could be the best way to establish a nice lawn. Sprigs of hybrid bermuda grass, St. Augustine grass and zoysia grass will usually establish a root system in several weeks when watered and managed properly. Plugs set on 6-inch or 1 foot centers arc an excellent way to introduce a more adapted lawn grass into an old lawn without totally dc slroying the existing stand Regardless of which method you use to establish your lawn grass, proper soil fertility and preparation is essential. Soil test kits can be ob tained from the N.C. Cooperative Extension Serv ice. IX-tails of specif ic methods of lawn establishment arc outlined in the N.C.
