CLUB BRIEFS Elks Host Member Talent Show TickcLs go on sale March 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Calabash Elks Lodge for a member talent show to be held Saturday, March 27, at 7:30 p.m. Sealing is limited to 100 people. Tickets are S5 per person and in clude popcorn and pretzels on the table, said Mary Noorigian, presi dent of the Elks Auxiliary. NARFE Meets March 9 The Brunswick County Chapter of the National Association of Re tired Federal Employees (NARFE) will hold its monthly meeting at the Sandfiddler Restaurant, Southport. on Tuesday, March 9, at noon. Guest speaker will be Mac Spicer, vice president of the organization's Area 5. All members and prospective members arc invited. NARFE meet ings are open to the public, and membership is available to all feder al retirees and federal employees with at least five years of service. Area Woman A Leland woman is among 37 nominated for the 1993 Distin guished Women of North Carolina Award. Kathy Carncs McKnight's nomi nation is for voluniecrism, specifi cally for her work with the Associ ation for Children for Enforcement of Support's (ACES) New Hanover County chaptcr. According to a letter of nomina tion by Marry Ann Mcrryman, Mc Knight began her activism with a child support forum sponsored joint ly with the Child Advocacy Com mission of Wilmington. She later or ganized a candlelight vigil at the New Hanover County Courthouse to support the issue of children who do not receive child support from abas net parents. She also rode with police officers in a round-up in which 12 fathers were served with warrants and ar rested; their children were conse quently provided with more than $30,000 in delinquent child support ordered by the court. "I believe the nomination of Kathy for this award will bring the serious plight of children needing Among Nominees For Award child support to the public's atten tion," Merryman's letter states. "Her accomplishments in serving the chil dren of North Carolina have helped raise the level of awareness in our community." The award, first presented in 19X4, recognizes women "whose contributions to the suite or to the nation have had a significant impact upon the lives of citizens or who have attained outstanding levels of personal achievement in a particular field." Past winners include Salis bury native Elizabeth H. Dole, for mer sccrctary of transportation and president of the American Red Cross; and Maya Angelou, poet and playwright who teaches at Wake Forest University. Gov. James B.
