(919)tto;s-2576 i r/iizabethtown, NC / COUGARS WIN IN OVERTIME White Leads South Brunswick Past Upset-Minded Trojans NY DOUG RlfTTKR South Brunswick's Josh White scored 44 points, including nine in overtime, to lead the Cougars to a 90-8! w.n nvor host West Bruns wick Friday night in Waccamaw 2 A Conference basketball. White, playing his final regular season high school game, left a last ing impression on the West Bruns wick faithful who packed the gym. They saw the Trojans lose their sev enth straight to South. "Josh White took us to school," West Brunswick Coach Billy Mims said following the game. "We haven't had anybody who could stop him in three years. I'm glad he's gone." The senior point guard connected on three three-point shots, converted Pn ibrcc-point plays and made .of 19 free throw attempts. The 44 points was his second-highest total ol the season. White burned the nets for 46 points last Dec. 4 against East Co lumbus. But Friday night's perfor mance may have been White's best of the season since it was up to him to carry the Cougars after two starters were benched. South Brunswick Coach Gene Doanc didn't play starting forward Scooter Moore for disciplinary rea sons. Another stancr, Kevin Smith, didn t enter the game until the sec ond half. "I just tried to get off to a good start and hit my outside shot," White Slid after the game. White said Smith's presence in the second half relieved him or some of the scoring pressure. With the win. South Brunswick improved to 10-4 in the Waccamaw Conference and 15-8 overall. The Cougars finished second in the con ference, while the fifth-place Tro jans dropped to 7-7 in the league and 8-15 overall. West Brunswick fell behind 8-2 early and trailed 20-15 after one quarter. The Trojans were down 23 17 when they went on a 14-0 run to lake a 31-23 lead with 2:47 left in the first half. South's White, who scored 23 of his points in die first half, brought the Cougars back from the eight point deficit with 10 points in the period s final two minutes to mak~ the halftimc score 35-35. Despite White's heroics. West Brunswick led 53-50 after three quarters and held a 63-56 advantage with six minutes remaining in the game before South started chipping away at the lead. Smith, who came off the bench in the third quarter, scored eight of his 13 points during a 14-3 run that gave the Cougars a 70-66 lead with ?31 remaining. Smith came up empty on two onc-and-onc chances in the final 35 seconds, however, and West sent the game into overtime when junior for ward Anthony Moody drained an 8 foot jumper with three seconds left in regulation. West Bninswick didn't have a prayer in overtime. Two starters louled out in the fourth quarter and '? Defending is West's Jonathan Williams. two more in the extra period to leave the Trojans with young, inexperi enced players on the floor. White scored the first six points in overtime to give South an 81-75 lead. Moody's jumper cut the mar gin to four points with 1:18 remain ing, but Smith sank two free throws and White turned a Trojan turnover into a three-point play to put the game out of reach. Senior center Lonnie Mitchell, playing his final home game for the Trojans, led West Brunswick with 20 points. Timothy Daniels added 19 and Ty Brown came off the bench to score a season-high 16. West Brunswick needed to win Friday to have any realistic shot at making the state playoffs. Now, the Trojans will have to win this week's conference tournament to make the playoffs. "We made turnovers in crucial situations," Mims said. "I fell like we played hard, just a little sporadic. That's the pressure of a big ball game and the home crowd." West Brunswick's boys haven't defeated South Brunswick since 1990. Mims said the seven straight losses are primarily due to a lack of confidence by the Trojan players. "1 believe we don't believe we can beat South Brunswick. It's been so long," Mims said. "Until one day when we beat them, I don't think these kids will believe they can beat them." At halftime of the boys' game, the 1992 West Brunswick football team was recognized for its state 2-A championship. A banner was un veiled, and Shallotte Alderman Roney Cheers presented a plaque to the school. In the junior varsity game, James Morgan scored 18 points and Derek Frink had 13 to lead West Bruns wick to a 53-51 win. Devon Johnson led the Cougars with 10 points.
