Spring is the busiest of the three high school athletic seasons, with five sports going at one time. That makes it lough on sports writers who, try as they may, can't be everywhere at once. Despite the hectic schedule, spring may be the most enjoyable of the three seasons. The weather is usu ally pleasant. It'll feel plenty good to get outdoors after spending the winter cooped up in smelly gyms. At West Brunswick High, the new season officially kicks off Monday when the defending Waccamaw Conference champion Trojan tennis team entertains Whitcville. Coach Marti Gillis has most of her team back from last year, plus a few new faces who should strengthen the ladder. Monday afternoon's match fig ures to be an important one in determining this season's conference champi on. West and Whitevillc battled tooth-and-nail for the conference crown last year. They split their regular-season matches, but the Trojans won a mi ni-playoff that determined the league champ. The Trojan golf team also tees off next Monday afternoon in a Waccamaw Conference match at Fairmont. Ben Hunt, a local pro, will coach this year's squad, which will play home matches at Brick Landing. Things don't let up after the tennis and golf matches Monday. On Tuesday, Coach Traccy James' softball team opens its 1993 campaign with a home game against the Pender Patriots. The Lady Trojans, also a defending conference champion, went 13-4 last season and should field another solid squad this spring. Coach James has most of his players back from last year. Pender, currently a member of the Coastal 3-A Conference, will join the new-look Waccamaw 2-A/3-A Conference next school year. Trojan-Patriot clashes will become very important starting next fall. On Wednesday, the Trojan tennis team returns to action against visiting Fairmont. West's junior varsity baseball team also opens Wednesday with a home game against New Hanover's Wildcats. Coach David Arrowood, one of the masterminds behind West Brunswick's state football championship last fall, will lead the junior varsity baseball team this season. The West Brunswick campus takes a break Thursday afternoon, when no home events are scheduled. The boys' and girls' track teams will open Thursday at Whiteville. Fairmont and East Bladen will join the Trojans for the quad-meet. Coach Jim Brett, who led the Trojans to the state football title in his first year at West Brunswick, will coach track this spring. Brett is no stranger to track and field. At Tarboro High School, he coached the boys' team to 12 conference championships, five eastern championships and four state championships in 15 years. Panlon the pun, but that's a pretty good track record. On Friday, Coach Mike Alderson's varsity baseball team opens the sea son against visiting Waccamaw Academy. The Trojans are coming off a 19 7 season in 1992, when they reached the eastern finals for the first time in history. Look for the Trojan diamond club to be strong again this season. Anyone interested in getting a sneak peak of the baseball team should be at the high school today (Thursday) for a 4 p.m. scrimmage with South Columbus. West Brunswick had a 48-47 lead with 10 seconds remaining but missed a onc-and-onc opportunity and then committed a foul to send the Lady Chargers to the line with five seconds left. Northwood also came up empty on the onc-and-one chance, but grabbed the missed free throw, scored the game-winning basket and tacked on a free throw for a three point play. "Wc had every opportunity to win it," West Brunswick Coach Brcnda Council said Tuesday. "Wc didn't rebound and wc made crucial turnovers down the stretch that killed us." Angela Perry scored 28 points and Lisa Watson chippcd in 13 to lead Northwood. Nicole Norris had 15 points, Kancka Grissetl 13 and Monique King 11 for West Bruns wick. Host Northwood jumped out to a 16-6 lead in the first quarter, but West Brunswick outscored the Lady Chargers 22-14 in the second period and trailed 30-28 at halftime. The "It seems like it's been that way the whole year. Games that could have gone either way haven't gone our way." ?West Bruns. Girls Coach, Brenda Council scorc was 37-37 after three quarters. "We were basically trading bas kets the whole second half," Council said. "We played pretty good, but we just didn't crash the boards." Northwood's Perry dominated in the paint. "She just killed us on the boards," Council said. "She went af ter everything. They just threw it up and she went after it." West Brunswick was the third seeded team from the Waccamaw Conference. Northwood, which is located in Pittsboro, finished third in the Central Tar Heel Conference. The loss at Northwood marked the seventh time this season that the Lady Trojans lost by three points or less. "It seems like it's been that way the whole year. Games that could have gone either way haven't gone our way," Council said. West Brunswick finished the sea son 13-12. The Lady Trojans lost six of their first eight games, but came on strong in the second half of the season and put together a five-game conference winning streak down the stretch. Coach Council said the season was frustrating. "I wasn't real, real pleased with the season. I felt like we had the potential to do a lot bet ter than we did if we had a little more dedication on the team and de sire to win." Northwood and West Brunswick also squared off in the first round of the 1992 state playoffs. The Lady Chargers jumped out to a 12-0 lead and held on for a 48-46 win in that game. West's Mims Optimistic Following Hoop Season BY DOUG RUTTER Despite a second straight season with a losing record and no playoff berth, the West Brunswick boys' basketball team made great strides this winter and shows promise of more improvement over the next few years. Those were the thoughts of Tro jan Coach Billy Mims last week fol lowing his team's final game of the season, a 70-62 loss to West Colum bus in the opening round of the Waccamaw Conference Tourna ment. The Trojans led 45-43 after three periods in last Tuesday's game, but the Vikings outscorcd West 27-17 in the fourth quarter to pull out the vic tory at Fairmont High School. Mims said the Trojans didn't re bound well, and that allowed the Vikings to get second and third shots on the offensive end. "We played pretty good the first half. We just didn't feel like playing that sec ond half." West Columbus' Nate Frink led all scorers in the game with 20 points and Magellan Powell chippcd in 13 for the Vikings, who swept the Trojans in three meetings this sea son. Anthony Moody led the Trojans with 15 points, while Eric Johnson added 14 and Ty Brown had 13. Senior center Lonnie Mitchell, play ing his final game for the Trojans, scored 12 points. West Columbus edged West Brunswick for fourth place in the Waccamaw 2-A Conference this season with an 8-6 record. In doing so, the Vikings earned their first playoff berth since 1986. West Brunswick finished fifth with a 7-7 league mark and an over all record of 8-16. After losing 10 of their first 12 games, the Trojans came on in the second half of the season to win six of their last 12. The slow start could be attributed to West Brunswick's state champi onship season in football. Most of West's best basketball players were on the gridiron while other teams were preparing for basketball sea son. "I'm pleased overall with the year," Mims said. "We should have "Overall we did make some improvement from a year ago, and I hope to make some more improvement next year ?Trojan Coach Bill Mims won a few more conference games, but at least we have something to look forward to next season. A year ago we had nothing." A year ago, the Trojans had just completed a 4-19 campaign charac terized by a lack of team unity, lead ership and discipline. For the most part, this year's squad played as a team in victory and defeat. Mims is optimistic about next year because the Trojans will only lose two players to graduation. The 1993-94 team also will be young, with only one or two seniors expect ed to play. "With all of the inexperience, I'm pretty pleased with what we accom plished this year. We were just not as efficient as we could have been," Mims said. "Overall we did make some improvement from a year ago, and I hope to make some more im provement next year." Mims said West Brunswick needs to improve its rebounding and out side shooting. The Trojans didn't have anyone this year who could consistently score from the perime ter. West rebounded well for its size, but the coach pointed out that when the smaller players got tired they stopped rebounding. "We've got to get some bigger people." Mims also hopes to find a backup for sophomore point guard Eric Johnson, who spent very little time on the bench this season because the Trojans didn't have another ade quate ball-handler.
