losopher and STANLEY
Oxford fellow, Francis Herbert
Bradley. Bradley has been recog
nized for his original contribution to
philosophical thought in the area of
metaphysics.
The colloquium brought together
philosophers from five countries
working within the areas of meta
physics, epistemology and philo
sophical logic who have found ele
ment's of Bradley's philosophy
rclevcnt to contemporary issues.
Stanley's paper was entitled
"Bradley on Thought and Reality."
The Brunswick Community Col
lege underwrote a portion of Stan
ley's travel expenses.
Stanley also tcachcs at the Uni
versity of North Carolina at Wilm
ington and at Shaw University. In
1991 his first novel. The Legend of
Nance Dude, was published by John
F. Blair, Pub., of Winston-Salem. He
is at work on a second novel which
he hopes to finish this summer.
ASU Honor Students
Three Brunswick County students
have qualified for Appalachian State
University's dean list for the spring
semester. They are:

Beach, a senior majoring in risk and
insurance;

senior majoring in music perfor
mance; and
?Jennifer Leigh Rainey of Cala
bash, a senior majoring in industry
technology.
Meredith Grads
Two Southport women were
among 517 awarded bachelor's de
grees at Meredith College during its
92nd commencement exercises May
9.
They arc Carol Ann Brooks, a
Spanish major and daughter of Dr.
and Mrs. Ben Brooks of Country
Club Drive; and Susan Moniquc
Finley, a religion and English major
and daughter Dennis and Ruth Fin
ley of South Shore Drive.
NCSSM Recruits Four
Four high school sophomores
from Brunswick County have been
invited to attend the N.C. School of
Science and Mathematics (NCSSM)
in Durham.
The students arc Elizabeth D.
Dctrie of Shallottc, West Brunswick
High; Danny Holyficld and William
R. Lampc, South Brunswick High;
and Elizabeth K. Batson, who at
tends New Hanover High School in
Wilmington.
They are among 278 sophomores
statewide selected from a field of
843 applicants to attend the suite-run
residential school. The school serves
academically talented 11th and 12th
grade studcnLs who show promise of
exceptional development and/or a
special interest in science or mathe
matics. The state provides NCSSM
students with tuition, room and
board, textbooks, lab equipment and
routine health care.
Grades, a demonstrated interest in
science and mathematics, standard
ized test scores, teacher recommen
dations and personal interviews arc
considered in admission decisions.
Attends Seminar
Kathleen A. Thompson of Long
Beach, a 12th grade English and
SAT preparation teacher at South
Brunswick High School, recendy at
tended a seminar at the N.C. Center
for the Advancement of Teaching.
Thompson was one of 19 North
Carolina teachers participating in
"900 Cinderellas: Fairy Talcs
Around the World," May 16-21 con
ducted by the NCCAT senior fellow
A.D. Rud.
NCCAT, a unit of the University
of North Carolina, provides "intel
lectual renewal experiences for
teachers in a year-round series of in
terdisciplinary seminars," according
to a news release.

the equivalent of a high school
diploma can take GED (general edu
cational development) tests during
June at Brunswick Community Col
lege.
All except the writing section will
be given at BCC's main campus
north of Supply Tuesday, June 15, at
1 p.m. and June 29 at 5 p.m. TTie
same tests will be offered at two oth
er sites: Thursday, June 17, at 5 p.m.
at BCC's Southport campus on
North Lord Street; and Wednesday,
June 23, at 11 a.m. at BCC's Leland
Campus in the Leland Industrial
Park.
Students who wish to take the
writing skills test may do so Tues
day, June 8, at S p.m., at the main
campus.
Any GED test may be taken at
BCC's Southport Campus Thursday,
June 3, at 5 p.m., or at the Leland
Campus Wednesday, June 2, at 11
a.m.
GED classes at BCC may be en
tered at any time by students prepar
ing to take the tests. Also, personal
ized help in preparing is available at
the college learning lab in the ALS
Building on the main campus. Lab
hours are 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday
through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 2
p.m. Friday. Drop-ins arc welcome.

Memorial Service, Flag Presentation
Set May 31 By Beautification Group
A memorial scrvicc and flag presentation are scheduled by the
Sunset Beach Beautification Committee for Memorial Day. Monday,
May 31.
The event will take place at 9 a.m. at the beach gazebo.
Invited guests include Mayor Mason Barber, the Sunset Beach Town
Council and olher local dignitaries. The newly designed Town of Sunset
Beach flag will be officially presented, and the flag-raising ceremony
will mark the first time that the national, state and local flags fly in uni
son.
Special recognition to the late Cathy Peed, whose original design be
came the basis for the Sunsel Beach flag, will be included in the pro
gram.
The public is invited to attend.
Literacy Council Recognizes Tutors
The Brunswick County Literacy
Council at its May 13 meeting rec
ognized three volunteers for achiev
ing Master Laubach Tutor status by
reaching 300 hours of onc-on-onc
tutoring during the past year.
They arc Norma Buckbcc of
Boiling Spring Lakes, Sue McCann
of Shallouc and Isabel Taylor of
Ocean Isle Beach.
Volunteers receiving senior tutor
certificates for documenting 40
hours of tutoring were Long Beach
residents Ailccn Wood, Genevieve
Erway, Janet Greenfield and Evelyn
Loukas; Victor Nicoladsc and Dee
Caudle, Supply; John Richardson,
Ocean Isle Beach; Wall Anderson,
Southport; and Mary Lu DiFazio
and Ethel Green of Sunset Beach.
The following were elected to
serve on the executive board begin
ning July 1: Joseph Giamalva, chair
man; Patricia Ebert, vice-chair;
Karen McSwain, secretary; and Tom
Cluchcy, treasurer.
The meeting concluded with a
talk by economics professor Dr.
John Morgan, who emphasized the
necessity for upgrading literacy
skills in order for the United States
to remain competitive in a global so
ciety.
The literacy council provides free
tutoring for those who wish to im
prove their basic reading and writing
skills. It also provides free training
for volunteers. For additional infor
