Area Deaths And Funerals IDA M. ARCHBOLD Ida Marston Archbold, 82, of Calabash, died May 25 in The Brunswick Hospital, Supply. Bom Dcc. 17, 1910, in Patterson, NJ., she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Alfreda Story Marston. Before retiring she was employed with New Jersey Bell Telephone Co. Survivors includc a daughter, Jean Jann of Calabash; a son, Thomas Archbold of Lakcwood, Colo.; a sis ter, Virginia Thomas of Glen Rock, NJ.; four grandchildren; and two grcat-grandchildrcn. No local service was planned. DAVID B. SANFORD David Bruce Sanford, 64, of Saltaire Village, Calabash, died May 25 in Grand Strand General Hosp ital, Myrtle Beach, S.C. He was a re tired account controller. The memorial service was May 27 in St. James Episcopal Church, Shallotte, with the Rev. Richard Warner officiating. Burial was in While Haven Memorial Park, Pitts ford, N.Y. Born May 31, 1928, in Ithaca, N.Y., he was a son of the late Ben jamin and Esther Bishop Sanford. He was a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Calabash Elks Lodge. Survivors includc his wife, Pat ricia Fulmcr Sanford of the home; a son, David Sanford Jr. of Rochester, N.Y.; a daughter, Patty Ann Boccuzi of Penfield, N.Y.; three brothers, Benjamin Sanford of Ontario, Calif., Gerald Sanford of Durham and Thomas Sanford of Frccvillc, N.Y.; and four sisters, Esther Stark and Virginia Murphy, both of Ithaca, Jane Williams of Brcoktondalc, N.Y., and Lana Boyer of Wheat Ridge, Colo. LLOYD EDWARD EVANS Lloyd Edward Evans, 74, of Supply, died May 26. The funeral was May 28 at Oak Grove Baptist Church, where he was a member, by the Rev. Bobby J. Childress. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Mr. Evans was bom in Brunswick County on Sept. 28, 1918, a son of the late John Daniel and Bessie Lee Holdcn Evans. He was a retired farmer and U.S. Army veteran. Survivors includc his wife, Janic Hcwett Evans of the home; two daughters, Lois Evans of Supply and Josephine Evans Simmons of Castle Hayne; two sons, Bobby Gene Evans and James Edward Evans, both of Supply; four sisters, Icclanc Robinson and Virginia Hcwett, both of Supply, Cccile Fulford of Shallotte and Delia Margaret Cook of Conway, S.C.; 15 grandchildren; and 13 grcat-grandchildrcn. MATTHEW JOSEPH McDANIEL Mauhcw Joseph McDaniel, infant son of Danny Joseph and Sylvia Rence Shcpard McDanicl of Brier wood Estates, Shailoue, died May 30 in Duke University Medical Cen ter, Durham. The funeral was June 1 at Calvary Baptist Church, Shallotte, with the Rev. John Landers officiating. Bur ial was in Brunswick Memorial Gar dens. Mr. McDaniel was born Nov. 4, 1992, in Wilmington. In addition to his parents, sur vivors include a sister. Crystal Mc Danicl of the home; paternal grand parents, Pete and llene Hengstler McDaniel of Richmond, Ind.; his maternal grandfather. GERALDINE ELIZABETH MARTIN Geraldine Elizabeth Martin, 69, of Shallotte, died May 28 in The Brunswick Hospital, Supply. A graveside service was held May 30 in Brunswick Memorial Gardens, Shailoue, by the Rev. George Spcakc. She was bom in Elizabeth City on Aug. 18, 1923, a daughter of the late Jerry Jones and Mary Love Hughes. She was retired from the Brunswick County Schools. Survivors include her husband, Archie F. Martin of the home; a son, JerTy Martin of Latta, S.C.; a daugh ter, Jeanne M. Grasperge of Arden; a sister, Mary Louise Taylor of Smith field, Va.; and five grandchildren. During World War II he was a prisoner of war in Stalag, Germany, for 28 months. Mr. Rcdwinc was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth Wilson Rcdwinc. Survivors include his wife, Glyn na Redwine of Shallottc; three sons, Ruffin Rcdwinc Jr. of Sanford, Darrcl Ovcrsircct of Charlotte and Duanc Ovcrsircct of Tarpon Springs, Fla; five daughters, Wanda Spry of Kinder, La., Sharon Thompson of Norman, Okla., and Vonctta Stumb lingbear, Vickie Hale and Lcc Anne Rcdwinc, all of Shallottc; a sister, Dorothy Pierce of Graham; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grand children. LOTTIE MAE WATERS SELF Lottie Mac Waters Self, 91, of Shelby, died May 29 at Cleveland Memorial Hospital. The funeral was May 31 at Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Doug Hochmuth and the Rev. James McKinncy officiat ing. Burial was in ML Moriah Church Cemetery. She was born in Casar to the laic Elijah and Malinda Hunt Waters. Mrs. Self was retired from Lily Mills Co. and was a member of La fayette Street United Methodist Church and Lily Mill Old Timers Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy B. Self. Survivors include her sons, Lloyd D. Self of Lcland and Cecil (Buddy) Self of Lawndale; a daughter, Ruth Self Sperling of Shelby; a brother, Guy Waters of Henderson; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grand childrcn. CHRISTINE WILLETTS POTTER Christine Willctts Potter, 67, of Lcland died May 27 in New Han over Regional Mcdical Center, Wil mington. The memorial service was May 30 at Lcland Baptist Church, with the Rev. Billy Buchanan officiating. Mrs. Potter was born Aug. 1, 1925, in Brunswick County, the daughter of the late Isaac and Ethel Ward Willctts. She was a member of Lcland Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Jackson Tyler Potter of the home; one son, Jackie Poller of Bolivia; two daughters, Priscilla Hall of Leland and Pam Holloway of Wilm ington; three sisters. Myrtle Sullivan of Lumberton, Ophelia Sellers of Yaupon Beach and Hcttie Lewis of Manning, S.C.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. BERTRAM L. PARMENTER Bertram L. Parmcntcr, 75, of Orangeburg, S.C., died May 28 in Orangeburg Nursing Home. The funeral was May 31 at Thompson Funeral Home Chapel in Orangeburg, with burial in Green lawn Memorial Gardens, Wilming ton. Mr. Parmcntcr was born April 27, 1918, in Springfield, Mass. He was decorated U.S. Marine Corps veter an, having served in World War II and the Korean conflict. He was re tired from the U.S. Department of the Army Military Ocean Terminal, Sunny Point, Security Division, Southport He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Parmcntcr, and son, Jack Holt. Survivors include his guardian, Angela Jcnncss Brady of Orange burg; three stepsons, Donald Holt of Wilmington, Thomas Holt of Roa noke, Va., and William G. Wall of Springfield; 23 grandchil dren; and a number of grcat-grand childrcn. DAVID JAME SMALL SR. David James Small Sr. of Leland; died May 26 at New Hanover Re gional Mcdical Center, Wilmington. The funeral was May 30 at Black wcll Chapel AME Zion Church. Burial was in the Small Family Ce metery. VERLIE LOU SHAW SMITH Verlic Lou Shaw Smith, 88, of Route 2, Harmony, died May 29 in Rowan Memorial Hospital, Salis bury, after several years of declining health. She was a homcmaker. The funeral was May 31 at Rock Spring Baptist Church, Harmony, of which she was a member, with the Rev. Jesse Stroud officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bom in Iredell County on Aug. 4, 1904, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Augustus and Lillie Comer Shaw. She was preceded in death by her husband, Manuel Smith, and a daughter, Betty Lou Smith. Her survivors includc three sons, Webster M. Smith, Herbert S. Smith and Robert N. Smith, all of Route 2, Harmony; two daughters, Lina M. Ross of Shalloue and Audrey Smith of Salisbury; a niece; and two nep hews; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. RALPH W. COSBY Ralph W. Cosby, 67, of Supply, died May 31 in New Hanover Reg ional Mcdical Center, Wilmington. He was a retired truck driver. The memorial scrvicc was June 2 at Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Ser vice Chapel, Supply, with the Rev. Clarence Richardson officiating. Cosby was born in Norwood, Ga., on Nov. 22, 1925, the son of the late Lewis and Hattic Avery Cosby. Survivors includc his wife, Emma L. Cosby of the home; a son, Fred Bowlin of Davidson; a daughter, Vickie Clarke of Supply; two grand children, Sherry Wisnowski and Shane Bowlin; and two sisters. IRENE S.BROWN Irene S. Brown, 75, of Burgaw, died unexpectedly May 30. The funeral was June 2 at Har rell's Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Bob Chastain in charge. Burial was in Rivcrvicw Memorial Park. LILLIE MAE ROBBINS Lillic Mac Robbins of Lcland died May 30 in New Hanover Re gional Medical Center, Wilmington. Arrangements were to be announ ced by John H. Shaw's Sons Funeral Home. DOROTHY GRIFFITH HOLYFIELD Dorothy Griffith Holyficld, 73, of Raleigh and Holdcn Beach, died May 29. The memorial service was June 2 at Highland United Methodist Church. Mrs. Holyficld was bom in Mt Airy on March 28, 1920, to the late James and Zula Simmons Griffith, and lived at the Methodist Chil dren's Home in Winston-Salem. A 1942 graduate of Appalachian State Teacher's College, she taught school 31 years, 27 in the Raleigh public schools. She retired in 1977. Mrs. Holyfield was a longtime property owner and resident of Holden Beach. Survivors includc her husband, J. Watson Holyfield; a granddaughter, Tyler Gray Finnerty; a daughter, Lyn H. Finnerty of Atlanta; a son, James Watson Holyfield of Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Mary G. Yale of Raleigh; and two brothers, George Griffith of Southern Pines and Jack Griffith of Ashcboro. Jerry spent the next 15 years in the N.C. prison system, during which he met Jesus Christ as his savior. His prayers for a Christian wife were answered when he met Lisa in 1988. Inflated hopes of release, however, were met with denial of parole for 7 years. This long trial resulted in Jerry's full surrender of himself and his circumstances to his Heavenly Father. But the Lord has performed a supernatural adjustment and has been faithful to provide a new job, a new home, and a new beginning.
