Trojans Pound Patriots For Fourth Straiaht Win BY DOUG Rl'TTER Michael Lance scored two touch downs and liric Johnson accounted for two more as West Brunswick cruised to a 42-7 win over visiting Pender Friday in a Waccamaw 2A/3A Conference football game. It was the fourth straight win for the Trojans, who have scored 40 plus points per game during the streak and will travel to Whiteville this Friday for an important confer ence game. "Overall I was pleased tonight," West Brunswick Coach Jim Brett said. "It makes next week a very im portant football game." West Brunswick rushed for 302 yards Friday despite a nine-man de fensive front by the Patriots. The formation opened up the passing lanes, and West took advantage with 75 yards through the air. "Pender was pretty determined to try and stop our running game." Brett said. "We wanted to work on our running game against a nine man front, because we will see more of that." Seven different running backs helped carry the offensive load for West Brunswick, which averaged nearly 8 yards per carry despite the absence of two starting offensive linemen who did not play for disci plinary reasons. West also used a passing game that has shown gradual improve ment through the first six weeks of the season. "We've got a dimension with (quarterback) Fric Johnson that's good. He did a good job throwing the football for us." Brett said. West Brunswick improved to 2-0 in the conference and 4-2 overall. Pender fell to 0-2 in the league and 1-5 overall and will host the South Columbus Stallions this Friday. West halfback Steve Holmes, held under 1(H) yards rushing for the first time in four weeks, helped set up the first Trojan touchdown with a 28 vard punt return to the Pender 24 yard line. Lance scored the first of his two touchdowns two plays later on an 8 yard run up the middle. Sophomore kicker Derek Frink, who was a per fect 6-for-6 on extra points, gave West a 7-0 lead with 6:19 left in the first quarter. On its next possession. West Brunswick marched 52 yards in six plays. Lance scored his second 'TO of the night when he slipped through the left side of the line and raced 35 yards to the end zone. The Trojans bumped their lead to 21-0 with 1:43 remaining in the sec ond quarter. Eric Johnson flipped a 6-yard touchdown pass to tight end Heath Inman on fourth-and-goal to give the Trojans a comfortable half ?^Mnrr ' ? .?? ? m ? i WEST'S STEVE HOLMES struggles for yards against the Pender defense. Johnson sparked the drive with a 20-vard pass to Ty Brown and 30 yarder to Holmes. The junior quar terback then rolled right and scam pered 15 yards for his first rushing 'I'D of the season. The Patriots responded with their only scoring drive of the game, which was aided by 42 penalty yards against West Brunswick. Quarterback Robert Strickland threw X yards to Donald Barnes for the score. Kevin White booted the extra point with 2:51 left in the third quarter, and Pender trailed 28-7. West Brunswick crushed any hopes of a Pender upset by scoring on its next possession. Senior half back William Stanley capped the six-play, 51 -yard drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. Reserve halfback James Morgan, who had 64 yards on five carries, scored a fourth-quarter touchdown on a 3-yard run. West Brunswick's defense, which has allowed just five touchdowns during the four-game winning streak, continued to show improve ment against Pender. The Patriots managed just 146 total yards. "There's still a couple of things we need to correct," Brett said of his defense. "People are getting wide on us too easy." The referees were busy Friday, throwing 22 yellow flags and penal izing the teams for 229 yards. "It was just an ugly game." Brett said. THE YARDSTICK West Bruns.
