Stoveken, who recently retired to Brunswick County from New jersey, said the trip from the Ocean Isle Beach Airport to the Brunswick County Airport near Long Beach was the farthest he's flown "Ruthie" since he moved South. The retired Johnson & Johnson surgical needle maker built the 508-pound World War I -style aircraft in the cellar of his New Jersey home. Two Fatal Wrecks On County Roads a young man from Ash was killed sometime Friday when the truck he was driving overturned in a ditch on Project Road (S R. 1333), a dirt road that cuts through the Green Swamp between Ash and Prospect. It was the second fatality in Brunswick County in as many weeks, according to Trooper T.I. Pearce of the N.C. Highway Patrol office in Wilmington. Marlin Dale Smith Jr., Ash, 22, was driving a 1993 Nissan pickup east on S.R. 1333, according to the report filed by N.C. Highway Patrol Trooper J.H. Kerr. The truck traveled left of center and ran off the left side of the high way, struck a ditch on the left side and went out of control. The truck overturned, coming to rest on its top in a deep ditch with a large drainpipe. Smith was partially thrown from the vehicle on impact. The report in dicated he was not wearing a seat belt. Damage to the truck was estimat ed at $8,000. On Thursday, Nov. 4, a Lcland woman was killed when she failed to yield the right of way to a vehicle on U.S. 17 at Town Creek. Killed was Allie Marie Skipper Wescott, 67. At approximately 7:40 p.m. Mrs. Wescott was traveling east on Zion Church Road (SR. 17(11) and stopped her 1991 Oldsmobile at the intersection with U.S. 17. She started across the southbound lanes of U.S. 17, failing to yield the right of way to a southbound 1989 Ford van operated by William Dwight Rigsby. 40, Kingstree, S.C. The van struck Wescott 's car in the driver's side. Trooper B.C. Jones reported. No charges were filed. Damage was estimated at $6,(HK) to the van and $8,000 to the Wescott vehicle. Southport Baptist Records Microfilmed By University Kecords of the Southport Baptist Church for 1871-93 recently have been microfilmed by the N.C. Baptist Historical Collection of the Z. Smith Reynolds Library at Wake Forest University. The church now has a security copy of its records on file in case the original records are ever damaged or destroyed. John R. Woodard, director of the collection, said the filmed records will join those from nine other Brunswick County Baptist churches now on microfilm in the collection. Woodard says all other North Carolina Baptist churches ? includ ing Missionary, Primitive and Black Baptist churches ? may take advan tage of the free service and have their records preserved.
