Fred Lewis Gurley. 83, of Long
Beach and formerly of Catawba
died Dec. 7 at Davis Hospital in
Statesville.
A graveside service was conduct
ed Dec. 11 by the Rev. W.C. Cock
man and the Rev. John Milholland at
Abilene Church of Christ Cemetery
Mr. Gurley was born Sept. 28.
1910, in Catawba County, the son of
the late James William and Viola
McKnight Gurley. He was a retired
brick mason, a member of Fifth
Creek Presbyterian Church and a
World War II veteran of the U.S.
Marine Corps.
He was preceded in death by his
first wife. Bona Lee Carter Gurley,
and his second wife, Ethel Cratei
Gurley.
Survivors include three daughters,
Barbara Shoemaker, Virginia Step
hens and Brenda Lackey, all of
Statesville; two sons, Fred Lewis
Gurley Jr. of New London and
Wayne Gurley of Salisbury; two sis
ters, Edna Scarborough and Ola
Christian, both of Kannapolis; two
brothers, Albert Gurley of States
ville and Glenn Gurley of North
Myrtle Beach. S.C.; 17 grandchil
dren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Johnny McNeal Moore, 44. of
Bolivia died Dec. 8 in New Hanover
Regional Medical Center. Wilming
ton, of cancer. He was a self-em
ployed carpenter.
The funeral was Dec. 10 at Joy
Assembly, Southport. conducted by
the Rev. John Nocera and the Rev.
Jerome Jenrette. Burial was in
Hickman Cemetery, Shallotte.
Mr. Moore was born in Southport
on Dec. 9, 1949, a son of the late
Lawrence and Virginia Hawks
Moore.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia
Ann Patti Moore of the home; a son,
Wesley Allen Moore of Bolivia; a
daughter, Iris Ann Moore of the
home; five brothers, Arden Moore
and Jerry Moore, both of Shallotte,
Raybon Moore of Bolivia and Pat
Moore and Chester Moore, both of
Calabash; and two sisters, Gail M.
Reaves of Calabash and Esther M.
Bender of Crisco, Pa.

LENNA ALLRED THORSEN
Lenna Allred Thorsen, 65, of
Southport, died Dec. 7 at her resi
dence.
A memorial service was held
Dec. 11 at Southport Presbyterian
Church, with the Rev. Dr. Murray
Page officiating. Burial will be "on a
pretty spring day" in Old Southport
Cemetery.
Mrs. Thorsen was born April 17,
1928, in Chihuahua, Mexico, a
daughter of Mormon missionaries
Edgar J. and Minnie P. Midkiff
Allred. She has lived in Southport
since 1952. After spending early
years in Mesa, Ariz., she lived in
Northport, Wash., with her adoptive
parents, Mick and Elsie Reisin.
She was a lifelong Mormon, at
tended Southport Presbyterian
Church, was a former member of the
Southport-Oak Island Library
Board, a member and past president
of Southport 55 and Over Club, a
Dosher Memorial Hospital volun
teer, organist and painter.
Survivors include her husband,
William Robert Thorsen of the home;
two daughters, Leigh Ann Watts of
Heidelberg, Germany, and Robin
Marie lumburi of Blooming Grove,
N.Y.; two sons, William Robert
Thoisen II of Angleton, Texas, and
David I'homas Thorsen of Abingdon,
Md.; two sisters, Josephine Spain of
Mesa, Ariz., and Juanita Allrcd; a
brother, Elmer Allred of Tempe,
Ariz.; and nine grandchildren.

Louisville. Ken.
She formerly served as pianist for
Back-To-The-Bible Broadcasting in
Lincoln, Neb. More recently, she was
organist at North Lexington Baptist
Church and also taught piano.
Survivors include her husband,
the Rev. Jimmy Davis Jones of the
home, a former pastor of Calvary
Baptist Church in Shallotte; a son,
Wendell Jones of Cary; two broth
ers, Rodney Wendell of Axtell,

' Kingdom ' Set For Sunday
The music ministry of Southport
Baptist Church will share the
Christmas music celebration "King
dom" by David Clydesdale on Sun
day. Dec. 19, at 7 p.m. in the church
sanctuary.
The work will be presented by the
50-member adult choir, soloists and
narrator under the direction of Eddie
Hicks, minister of music and youth,
and accompanied by Amaretta
Prevatte, organist, and Pam I licks,
pianist.
Providing solos will be Pam
Hicks, Tom Huskey, Susan Muggins.
Debbie Evans. Bob Brown and
Joanna Holden. Roy Hendricks will
serve as narrator, and Mary will l>e
portrayed by Jennifer Baxter.
The adult and high school hand
bell choirs and the newly formed
flute choir will provide prelude be
ginning at 6:40 p.m. The children's
choir will lead in the call to worship.

Jennings To Speak
The Rev. Wesley Jennings will be
guest speaker this Sunday, Dec. 19,
at the Oak Island Presbyterian
Church. His topic will be "The Joy
of Christmas" from the scripture of
Matthew 2:1-12.
