Area Musicians Eligible For Symphony Auditions The Wilmington Symphony Or chestra will hold auditions for new members Monday, Jan. 10. in Kenan Hall on the campus of UNC-W. Interested musicians should bring a prepared piece and plan to do some sight-reading. The 50-member orchestra is made up of mujsicians from the local schools, UNCW and the area com munities. During the concert season rehearsals are held every Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. in Kenan Hall. Public concerts under the direction of Dr. Steven Errante, conductor, are performed in October, November, December, February and May. PEOPLE IN THE NEWS Hankins Receives Bachelor Of Arts Degree Corey Hankins was one of 30 stu dents completing requirements for a bachelor of arts degree at Catawba College following the fall semester. Hankins, the son of Jimmy and Patricia Hankins of Supply, earned a degree in therapeutic recreation. He will receive his diploma dur ing commencement exercises May 7. Mimas Reports Marine Staff Sgt. Kenneth Klimas recently reported for duty at Marine Corps Recruiting Station, Raleigh. Klimas is the son of Lee Klimas of Marlin Drive. Holden Beach. He is a 1980 graduate of West (slip High School and joined the Marine Corps in January 1982. Trains At Parris Island Jason A. Washell recently com pleted basic training with Recruit Training Regiment, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, S.C. Washell is the son of William G. Washell of Shallotte. During the cycle, recruits are taught general military subjects de signed to prepare them for further academic and on-the-job training in one of the Navy's 85 occupational fields. Studies include seamanship, close -order drill, naval history and first aid. The 1993 graduate of Moshannon Valley High School of Houtzdale, Pa., joined the Marine Corps in June 1992. Completes Course Air Force Airman Stephen M. Sutton has graduated from the air craft pneudraulic systems course at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas. Students were taught the princi ples of operation, inspection, testing and repair of pneudraulic and hy draulic units. Included were aircraft familiarization, ground safety prac tices and the use of technical publi cations. Sutton is the son of Michael H. Sutton and stepson of Kathryn Sut ton of Holden Beach. He is the also the son of Beverly Cagle of Carthage. Deployed To Somalia Army Spec. Clifton Woods has deployed to Somalia in support of Operation Continued Hope. The operation is to provide hu manitarian relief to the Somali peo ple in accordance with a United Nations Security mandate. He is a cargo specialist in Moga dishu. Woods is the son of Wilton and Zola M. Woods of Shallotte. At Ft. Jackson Army Pfc. Brian S. Monzon has completed basic training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C. During the training, students re ceived instruction in drill and cere monies, weapons, map reading, tac tics, military courtesy, military jus tice, first aid and Army history and traditions. Monzon is the son of Jose R. and Lois T. Monzon of Butler Road, Leland. Zoller Returns Seaman Apprentice Todd B. Zoller recently returned from a six month Western Pacific, Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf deployment aboard the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln, homeported in Alameda, Calif. Zoller is the son of Patricia A. McGinnis of Palmetto Road, Southport. His ship and its embarked air wing supported Operation Southern Watch, enforcing the U.N. -sane tioned "no-fly" zone over southern Iraq. Later, President Clinton or dered the aircraft carrier to the coast of Somalia in support of United Nations efforts in that country. During the deployment, Zoller and the air wing visited Hong Kong; the United Arab Emirates; Perth, Australia; and Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. While in Hawaii, the ship participat ed in several events commemmorat ing Pearl Harbor Day. The 1990 graduate of John T. Hoggard High School, Wilmington, joined the Navy in May 1992. Pageant Entries Due Now The Miss Brunswick County Scholarship Pageant Association is ac cepting applications for Tiny Miss, Junior Miss and Teen Miss Greater Brunswick County to he held Feb. 12. All girls in Brunswick County between the ages of 4 and 6 and 10 and 16 are eligible to enter. The entry fee is $75 per girl. All participants will receive a participant trophy.
