The Trojans started the season
slowly, partly because most ol the
team didn't slop playing lootball un
til mid-December. After losing five
of its lirst six games. West
Brunswick li.is won three of its last
four.

games on the schedule this week, in
cluding a Tuesday night tilt in
Whiteville (2-0. 7-3). The Trojans

The Trojans lost to Wilmington
Hoggard for the third time of the
season last Wednesday in Shallotte.

West Bruns. led 35-34 after three
quarters, but the Vikings outscored
the Trojans IK-'> in the linal period
for the non-conference victory.
John Gaddy scored 13 points and
Alan Cox had ! 2 lor Hoggard (S-3).
which had posted earlier wins over
West Brunswick by scores of 56-50
and 46-36.
Leading the Trojans (3-6) were
Anthony Moody with 14 points.
Eric Johnson with 13 and Timothy
Daniels with 10.
Hoggard also rallied in the fourth
quarter to win the girls' game, 5N
51. Catrice Horton scored 16 points
for the Lady Vikings (9-2).
West Brunswick (3-6) was led by
senior center Nicole Norris with 16

cia Morgan with 13.

Trojans, who suffered an 87-33 loss
last month at lloggard. gave the
Lady Vikings a scare last week.
West Brunswick led 31-24 at half
time and carried a 43-39 lead into
the tourth quarter. Hoggard out
scored West 19-8 down the stretch
for the win.
Hoggard's junior varsity was a
SI-46 winner. Aljuan Burnette led
the Vikings w ith 13 points, and Jere
mie Varnum had 14 for the Trojans.

second quarter with a 7-0 run to trim
West's lead to 16-15.
But the Trojans used a 5-0 spurt
to rebuild their lead to six points -a
lead they maintained tor the rest ot
the first half.
Ix-ading 31-27 early in the third
quarter. West scored eight unan
swered points to grab a 39-27 lead
with 3:30 left in the period. The
Trojans carried a 10-point advantage
into the fourth quarter.
A three-point play by Pender's
Jerod Henry cut the lead to 43-36

lead at 49-46 with 4:07 remaining.
Pender never got within 10 points
the rest of the way.
Stevens, in his first year at West
Brunswick, said the Trojans could
have won by more (hun 11 points,
hut he w.isn't complaining.
"Pender is a well-coached team."
Stevens said "In the conference it's
not the margin of victory that's im
portant. it's the victory itself."

and Amy Rivenbark added 12 for
the Lady Patriots, who improved to
I-1 in the Waccamaw Conference

Brunswick (1-1. 3-7).
The Lady Trojans opened the
game strong, scoring nine unan
swered points in the Inst quarter to
lead 15-7 alter one period. Moody
scored six points in the second stanza
to give West a 24-17 lead at halftime.
Pender opened the second half
with an 8-0 run and took a 25-24
lead on Jacobs' 15-foot jumper with
5:51 left in the third quarter. West
regained the lead momentarily, but
Pender led 3I-2M heading into the ti
nal period.
After the Lady Patriots took a 35
31 lead early in the quarter, the I aiiv
Trojans scored five straight points
and took a 36-35 lead on Amber
. Mercer's lavup with 4:34 remaining.
Pender responded with the deci
sive N-0 run and led 43-36 with 1:52
left to play. West Brunswick twice
cut the deficit to six points, but
couldn't get any closer.
The Lady Trojans were without
the services of senior center Nicole
Norris. who was out of town on a
school trip.
