SPORTING SCENE West Brunswick Home For Playoff Openers As long as there are no major upsets at this week's Waccamaw Conference Basketball Tournament. West Brunswick's boys and girls will advance to the state 3A play offs. Better yet. both teams will open the playoffs on their home court. The Lady Trojans are scheduled to open the playoffs next Monday night, while the boys will enter post season play on Tuesday. West's boys and girls both con cluded regular-season play last Friday night with losses to South Brunswick. With 5-7 Waccamaw Conference records, both West Brunswick teams will be number two seeds out of the Waccamaw. All we know right now is that both first-round playoff games will start at 7 p.m. and the West Brunswick girls and boys will host the third-place teams out of the Triangle Conference. We won't know the opponents by name until the conference basketball tournaments are concluded this week. In both cases, boys and girls, it will either be Harnett Central or Cape Fear paying a visit to Shallotte. West Brunswick's girls will be making their fourth straight appearance in the state playoffs, while the Trojan boys arc making their first trip to the post-season party in three years. South Brunswick's girls also have qualified for the state playoffs. As the top 3A seed out of the Waccamaw Conference, the I.ady Cougars will receive a first-round bye and an automatic berth in the sectional semifinals. Coach Mike Isenberg's girls will open the playoffs next Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at Campbell University against either the second-place team from the Mid-Piedmont Conference or the third-place team out of the Triad Conference. Raleigh Bound If my little red Subaru can make it all the way to Raleigh this weekend, I'm planning to take in the N.C. State-Wake Forest basketball game on Saturday afternoon. It will be the final home game this season for the Wolfpack, which start ed off slowly but has probably shown more improvement during the course of the season than any other team in the ACC. West Brunswick High School product Ricky Daniels has been a big part of that turn-around. I'm looking forward to watching Ricky perform and meeting with him after the game. NMB 68, Shallotte 66 It's never been an ambition of mine to become a police officer, but I couldn't pass up an invitation to play for the Shallotte Police Department basketball team Saturday night. The locals took on a VERY physical North Myrtle Beach Police Dc|>aiiuit:iii Iciuii ifi a chanty game at Lons Elementary School and lost by the slimmest of margins. 68-66. Not that it really matters, but Shallotte could have won easily had the officials actually watched the game. I could have sworn I saw NMB Police badges pinned to their zebra suits. I found it quite interesting that Shallotte Officer Keith Croom was called for two fouls while he sat next to me on the bench. The scoreboard/clock operator also seemed about 10 cents short of a quarter. I think he checked his brain at the door because every time Shallotte scored, North Myrtle Beach was rewarded with points. Chief Rodney Gause wants a rematch. Stay tuned. Veteran Ferster Wins First Racing Title It was a long time coming, but veteran remote-control race car dri ver Fddie Ferster has won his first points championship in the Southern R/C Motors ports Club. A Shallotte resident and driver of the Kodak Chevrolet, Ferster held off Doug Alsbrooks and the True Value Ford by 19 points to win the club's winter season points champi onship. Ferster finished with 220 points. Alsbrooks followed with 201, and rookie driver Ricky Danfoid check ed in with 198. Al Ward finished with 196 points and Paul Holdcn had 190 to round out the top five. Danford, driver of the Hooters Ford, was honored as the Out standing Rookie for the winter sea son, while STP Pontiac driver Lynn (iause received the Hard Charger Award. The Southern R/C Motorsports Club is a group of local racing enthu siasts who race tiny, remote-control Winston Cup cars. They compete on a concrete track south of Shallotte. The club has adopted a new for mat for the 1994 season, which will begin this Sunday, March 6. "This season will include 22 races and continue through November. The 1994 race schedule is as fol lows: March 6, 19, 20: April 9, 10, 24; May, 1, 15, 29; June 12, 26; July 10, 24; August 7, 21, 28; September 11, 25; October 9, 23; November 6, 20. In addition to helping new dri vers, the Grand National Class will give experienced racers the opportu nity to brush up on their "tight quarters" driving skills. Southern R/C Motorsports has scheduled eight joint racing sessions this year with a group from the Myrtle Beach, S.C., area. The local club will host the South Carolinians on March 6, April 10, May 29 and June 26. Road (rips to the Coastal R/C Speedway in Socastee have been slated March 27, May 22, June 5 and July 17. Race times at both tracks will be 3 p.m. during joint sessions. Anyone interested in joining the Southern R/C Motorsports Club should contact a member or visit the track on race day.
