MORE LETTERS Despite Getting Ticket He Appreciate s Tine Village ' EDITOR S NOTE: The following was addressed to the Town Clerk of H olden Beach. A copy was provided as a letter to the editor. Madam or Sin Enclosed with this letter please find payment in full for a parking ticket I received on July 14 while my family and I vacationed in Holden Beach. While I am sure you will find this unusual, I pay this fine with pleasure and I want to take the opportunity to tell you how much my family and I enjoy our annual vacation in your fine village. In addition, I want to pass along my compliments to all employees of the village for the fantastic job they 00 in both taking care of the beaches and, most importantly, looking out for the welfare of all of us who have come to enjoy Holden. This is our sixth year there and we are already planning our seventh. 1 know that it is through your hard work that you'll continue to keep Holden Beach the friendly family spot it is. Keep up the good work! Joel M. Genung Tulsa, Okla. Think About Future To the editor Our family has spent almost year ly vacations at Sunset Beach for the past 20 years. We love this place very much because it has provided a way to renew ourselves through the enjoyment of nature and a place to have family reunions. We now have members that come from Michigan. Virginia, Texas, Tennessee and Missouri. The attrac tion of this place is so strong that we all gather here. Even through we are only summer visitors, we feel that we are a part of the Sunset commu nity. Because of this I would like to make some comments. Over the years some of the nu merous beautiful and different species of birds that inhabited this island have been displaced by hu man footprints, the result of devel opment. Because of this I feel it is very important to think about the fu ture and preservation of what little is left relatively untouched. One small step to better protect the remaining nesting birds would be to ban dogs on the beach at all times. The natural beauty of neighboring Bird Island is an urgent matter that includes the need to protect its habi tat before it is destroyed. It would be nicc if Brunswick County would have at least one small comer of its unique natural inheritance saved for future generations to have a taste of how nature is without excessive hu man interference. I have enjoyed reading in your paper some of the writings inspired by Bird Island in the Kindred Spirit mailbox. Also noteworthy was the interesting tour offered by the Bird Island Preservation Society. The large number of people participating is a testament to the interest in Bird Island. I urge the officials of this commu nity, the county and the state to work hard to preserve this coastal gem and represent also the sentiments of the people who call this place home for a few weeks every year, tran sients just like the birds and turtles that visit this beach faithfully every year. Marina B. Brown Ann Arbor, Mich. Don't Just Dump To the editor: Wc have such a beautiful beach here in Sunset Beach, it disturbs me to see how people trash it. The other day I was using the walkway from Third Street down to the beach, and Adjusting To A ' Delicate Condition ' Walk into any medium- to large size bookstore and look in the fami ly section under "Pregnancy" and you'll find all kinds of advice: What to eat, what to expect, what to do, what to wear, what to name baby, even what to say to all those other folks who offer their advice. If all goes as planned, Don and I will become parents sometime in mid-March. An addition to our fam ily is something we've been wanting for about six years, so we're excited. Don, the perennial proud papa-to-be, has been gleefully telling everyone the news. I've gone a little slower, still in awe of the changes already taking place in my body though this baby won't arrive for quite some time. From "Expecting what?" to "Can you pay your bills?" reactions to our news have varied widely. Beyond the initial joking, people generally have shared our elation and affirmed our joy. Most have had a story of their own to share. We've decided "expecting" is an adventure and an education. I think God decided on a 40-week gestation period for humans not because the baby needs it, but because the par ents-to-be require that much time to prepare mentally, physically, emo tionally and financially for the new arrival. We're no exception. I've been hanging on to several pieces of furniture over the years for future nursery use, including a beau tiful rocking chair my grandmother gave me as a college freshman when she wisely realized my dorm room Susan Usher should have something for visitors to sit on other than a bed. Dor. will get the joy of turning our home office into a nursery with only a little help from me, it turns out. No painting or furniture refin ishing for expectant mothers; it seems exposure to paint fumes and the like aren't a good idea during pregnancy even though paint no longer has lead in it All these do's and don'ts make for a healthier baby and mom, but sometimes one has to wonder about all the fuss. Don and I were talking with my Aunt Dessa the other day about her experiences in giving birth to two daughters and a son. "Back then," she said, "having a baby was just something you did. It wasn't such a delicate condition." LfXoX^ ...Get out of the dog. house and into! a spacious new home while prices are most affordable on *94 models. CHOICENTER HOMES BY ANN Hwy. 17 N.. Please, whoever you are, refrain from this. We are proud of Sunset Beach and this detracts from its pris tine beauty. There are trash receptacles on the beach and also along the road, so there should be no need to just "dump" things wherever you are at the moment. Lois J. Pike Sunset Beach Appeal Verdict To the editor: I personally would like to see the county commissioners appeal the re cent court ruling regarding the school budget. Every time the administrators and staff want a raise or some new crea ture comfort, they cite our "chil dren's welfare and education" to reach our hearts, not our brains. We should also discontinue tenure, as evidenced by the poor grades and scholastic standings of our schools. Why are we rewarding incompetence? Unless and until a detailed and itemized description of expenses and expenditures is submitted, the ap peal should stand. The Menendcz Brothers' mentali ty does not become our school board. James A. Moore Shallotte Lights Out For Turtles To the editor: I sincerely hope the picture of the turtle in last week's edition was mis captioned. If in fact this photo, with flash, was taken as the female was headed to the beach to nest, it would have resulted in a "false crawl," i.e. would have become confused and dissuaded in her quest and turned around and returned to the sea. It is crucial to allow the female to beach and nest in complete solitude. Once she begins laying eggs, she en ters a hormone-induced state during which nothing will deter her from completing her task. When egg-lay ing is complete she will cover her nest and return to the sea. Studying the photo, and the apparent sand covered body. I suspect the picture was taken on her return to the sea. It is important that during the nesting season that everyone realize that walking the beach flashing lights in all directions can result in many false crawls. Nothing much can beat the thrill of stumbling along in the dark and coming upon a fe male loggerhead depositing her brood and shedding her "tears" in the process, but do so carefully and on her terms.
