ANNUAL REPORT Register Of Deeds Revenue Exceeds Expenses By $181,103 The Brunswick County Register of Deeds office took in $826,665 during the last fiscal year and spent $645,562. according to an annual report released recent ly Total revenue for the fiscal year 1993-94 included S539.104 in excise tax, $34,260 in miscellaneous rev enues. $12,520 from the issuance of 313 marriage li censes and $240,782 in recording fees. Some 6.515 deeds were recorded, totalling $65,378 in fees along with 5.598 deeds of trust. $101,900; 441 plats. $9,372; 1,216 financing statements, $9,728; and 4,664 miscellaneous recordings totalling $49,000. There were 4,512 satisfactions recorded However, due to a change in the law effective Oct. 1, 1993, regis ters of deeds could not charge a fee for recording the sat isfaction of mortgages and deeds of trust after that date. So of the 4.5 1 2 satisfactions recorded, there were fees of $5,406 charged for 1,081 recordings. Expenditures for the year included $291,974 for salaries and benefits; $12,702 for the retirement fund; telephone, $3,652; postage, $2,416; printing, $2,207; maintenance and repairs to equipment, $6,539; travel and training, $5,372; departmental supplies, $19,032; contracted services, $74; service maintenance contracts, $22,026; dues and subscriptions, $953; insurance and bonds, $100; equipment rental, $12,830; register of deeds excise tax, $257,935 and marriage taxes to the state $7,750. For its new fiscal year beginning July 1, the register of deeds office was allocated an operating budget of $680,741, of which $367,165 is earmarked for salaries and benefits, $311,776 for departmental cost and $1,800 for capital outlay. The office employees 11 full-time workers and one part-time employee. The totals released in the report are those of the reg ister of deeds office. An internal audit has not been per formed on the figures. Annual 'Hometown Holidays' Promotion To Begin Nov. 23 The South Brunswick Islands Chamber of Commerce Hometown Holidays promotion, designed to keep local residents shopping at home, is planned for Nov. 23-Dec. 22. Participating businesses will re ceived wrapped boxes for customers to register for "chamber dollars" and in-house prizes. Advertising in four consecutive issues of The Brunswick Beacon will highlight participating businesses. Last year more than 6,()00 shoppers registered in local businesses. The area Christmas Tree Lighting will take place Dec. 2 at the intersec tion of U.S. 17 and Village Road in Shallotte. Music will be provided by local choirs, individuals and group. Santa Claus will be on hand, also. A storefront decorating contest be part of the promotion. Participants will be judged on originality, color and theme of their decorations.
