Call the Pamlico Extension Service at 745 3476 for more information Unemployment Payments Extended RALEIGH — Federal unemployment payments scheduled to terminate in April have been extended at least through July and possibly longer. the Employment Security Commission reported Wednesday. Federal Supplemental Benefits (FSB), scheduled to end April 3, will now be available through July 31. A 13-week in sured average unemployment rate exceeding five percent caused the program to “trigger in” again in North Carolina. The February jobless rate was 6.9 percent, but only unem ployment among workers covered by unemployment in surance determines the availability of the federal payments. A slight seasonal increase in unemployment at the beginning of the year is responsible for the program being extended, said the ESC. Paid with federal funds, supplemental benefits are BRITE'S CLOTHIER Men's Fashion Wear'' Hookerland Shopping Center available to workers still unemployed after exhausting regular and extended state benefits. At mid March about 20,000 workers were filing FSB claims. Because the 13 week unem ployment average was between live and six percent, workers currently eligible for FSB payments will receive only one half their entitlement or the balance of the FSB claim already established, whichever is smaller. Money left in a worker’s claim after payments stop will be held in escrow and will become available if joblessness exceeds six percent. ‘ The insured unemployment rate between now and July will determine if FSB payments will be extended again, said the Commission. ISSISlIiflllSIIlSSS Shortcuts Out In Seed Buying Buying seed is not the place to economise in growing a garden. Buy the best. That's the suggestion of North Carolina State University extension spe cialists, who point out that seeds are among the least expensive items re quired for gardening so why not buy the best a vai table? Quality of seeds vary, even if they were pro duced last year and pack aged for 1976 planting. Seeds held over from a year or two years ago will have even greater varia tion in quality, because they’ve been around long er and subjected to mois ture and other elements that can affect germina tion. Your best bet is to buy from a reputable seed dealer; one who sells a lot of seed and knows the The Caswell News Last Tuesday was celebrated as Doctors’ Day throughout the South. It was set aside to honor our doctors and to express our appreciation to them for their works of healing and com passion. Mental retardation is a con dition. not a disease but the doctor is a valuable member of the multidisciplinary team that plans a program to meet the needs of each retarded person. The doctors play a part in diagnosis. A child brought to him may be suffering from a specific disease which causes mental retardation. Another child thought to be mentally retarded may be suffering from a sensory defect such as poor sight or poor hearing. Babies are taken to doctors. It is very important that any defects be detected early so that the child can be helped as much as possible during the developmental period. Often the doctor sees the child before any other professional workers. Here at Caswell a multidisciplinary team works DUt a habilitation program for every resident. Doctors give information about the physical condition of the resident. They prescribe drugs if necessary, rhey teach other staff members ibout diseases that can cause nental retardation. In an institution which serves as a temporary home for twelve hundred residents, people get sick. We have a hospital in which residents are treated by doctors and nurses. Our doctors at Caswell are Frank Badrock, Matt Harper, Nora Hsu, Joseph Katz, Carlos Kios, Mariano Roca and Kamal Salameh. This way you're usually better assured that you’re getting a good product, and you might even get some good gar dening advice thrown in free. One of the first things to look for is variety name. Every crop grown in North Carolina gar dens has several differ ent varieties that can be planted. Some are better adapted to the Coastal sPlain, while others may not grow well at all down east but do very well in the Mountain section. Also, North Carolina State University has test ed most varieties that are available and has de termined which tend to be superior among those that are adaptable to the state and its various sections. This information is a vailable at local Agricul tural Extension Service offices, and there is one in every county in the state. Another important thing you need to know about the seeds you plant is germination percentage. All commercial seeds are required to be labeled as to germination. If the package of sweet corn seeds you buy says "80 per cent germination,’’ you can expect eight of every 10 seeds you plant to produce a corn plant. If you get seeds from a neighbor or if you have kept some of your own from last year, you can run your own germination test. Count out seeds and place them between two paper towels. Space the seed out so they aren’t touching. Moisten the towels and put them in a warm place. Keep them moist and warm — about 70 degrees — until the seeds germinate. Count those that germinated and figure the percentage. This count will give you an idea of how many of your seeds to plant in order to get the kind of stand you want in the garden. I As a rule of thumb, 70; per cent (Termination is a bout as low as you ought to go. Anything testing lower than this should be replaced with better! seeds. Can you really afford to cut back on N-P-K? Last year many farmers i felt they had to cut back on fertilizer to save. But instead of saving they lost dearly. In fact, in some areas where growing conditions were good, yields dropped 25-30%. Don’t repeat the same mistake this season. To produce yields at the optimum economic level, get a complete fertilizer program that supplies all essential elements in the right quantities. Get Arcadian* liquid... made the SLF® way. With Arcadian* liquid we can supply the right amounts of N-P-K and other plant nutrients for each individual field and crop. No more, no less. What’s more, it’s made with POLY-N®, the phosphate source that increases the availability of nutrients to your crop. This season don’t cut back on N-P-K.
