(Continued from page 1) a lot of things to do. There are about seven of us in the Lab. The Hoffman is may favorite. I think that it is fun to all of us. I like it a whole lot better than going to the classroom and reading out of books. Glenda Whitney: I think that _ the tab is a very nice place. In the Lab you get a lot out of it if you just put your mind to it and read very carefully. The thing that I like most is Main Idea. In the Lab there are lots of other things such as: SRA, Pilot Library, Hoffman Reader and other sorts of things. I think that the Lab is different because in the classroom there are a lot of -people and you can’t con centrate. Creative writing always creates a good opportunity to conduct Individualized Instruction, which is the major teaching method utilized in the Arapahoe Reading Lab. Following the writing of the paragraphs, there was an in dividual conference with each student. With the combined efforts of the student and teacher, grammatical, pun cuation, and spelling mistakes were found and corrections were made by the student. We can learn much from students’ creative writing. When the paragraphs were read, it was discovered that the answers to many of the questions posed above were incorporated in their paragraphs. They gave a very -good summary of many aspects of the Lab situation. It was then decided, with their permission, to share their feelings with you. Students in the Lab work at their own pace on reading materials appropriate to their needs determined by test results and teacher judgement. This assures some sue ess as the students, with the help of the teacher and the teacher’s aide, progress into more difficult levels of reading materials. Much effort is made to create an atmosphere which is con ducive to learning. Mrs. Preston Banks and Mrs. Margaret gave exciting and enthusiastic reports of Eta State Convention held April 9th in Pinehurst, N. C. A most inspiring founder’s day program was presented by Miss Ruth Hoyle—depicting the Historic Past... An Inspiration For The Future—entitled “Our Challenge for Delta Kappa Gamma.” The setting for the program was a table appropriately arranged with three long red candles in tall brass candle sticks, a brass bowl of gorgeous red roses, and centered with a three tier birthday cake representing the National, State and local levels of the Society with twelve candles on the top of the cake; which represented the twelve founders of the Delta Kappa Gamma. Miss Hoyle told of the beginning of Delta Kappa Gamma by the enthusiasm and inspiration Miss Annie Webb Blanton and the challenge of the twelve devoted and loyal leaders in Austin, Texas, May 11, 1929. Miss Hoyle lighted one candle on the cake and said, “We light a candle in honor of the guiding light, appreciation, and effort to bind women in one common cause.” Mrs. Charles Parker lighted the second candle in honor of the twelve women who formed Eta State of North Carolina in 1934 and read a tribute to them; Announce Engagement Mr. and Mrs. Earl Banka Williams of Merritt announce, the engagement of their daughter, Susan Kay Williams to David Michael Garner of Newport The wedding has been set for June 27 In the Concord Christian Church in Florence. It is located next door to the old clubhouse and right next to the Park. Many kids turned out to help in the big move from one house to the other. The first thing we did was to clean out the new house so the sofa, TV, bumper pool table, and other equipment could be moved in. Mike Page, Whit Kemp, and Gary Slade carried the heavy furniture over to the new clubhouse. The second job undertaken was to paint the kitchen. The house was in fairly good con dition and the kitchen was the only room that needed painting. Two cans of white paint were donated by Ed Thompson for the job. Sammy Swindell, Susan Thompson, and Buddy Midyette did most of the painting while Ed Thompson put the finishing touches on the ceiling. While the kitchen was being painted we worked on cleaning out the old clubhouse. The house was left in much better condition than when we got it. The kids worked hard on improving its stating that Miss Ruby Googe is still in this state. Mrs. John Morton lighted the third candle in honor of the local Alpha Psi Chapter which was formed from Sigma Chapter of Kinston April 3, 1965. She also read the names of the charter members. Closing the program, Miss Margaret Fischel lighted six candles honoring the past presidents of the local chapter and presented each with a long stemmed red rose. They were: Miss Harriett Dill, Mrs. Hugh Sawyer, Mrs. Earle Smith, Mrs. W. T. Wilson, Mrs. Margaret Stevens, and Miss Sarah Alice Harris. Miss Harris expressed her sincere thanks to the group for their wonderful cooperation and loyal by placing at each plate a beautifully written Ascrostic “It Has Been" and Bicenntial Pencils. Smithwick. condition and they repaired both the front and back porches and hauled away ten truckloads of (rash. The only further thing that needed to be done to the old clubhouse was for it to be swept out and the games to be moved next door. Kay and Michelle Page worked hard on washing the windows and trimming the bushes around the new clubhouse. Even though everyone was working hard we did take time out to play tennis, ping pong, and volleyball. After all the cleaning, pain ting. and washing were finished the new clubhoi'- • looked clean and attractive The kids in Oriental should be very proud to have such a nice clubhouse to use. Many kids in this country do not have the privilege and op portunity to use any tupe of the nice facilities that Oriental’s Park has to offer. By Mary Ben Craven Woodmen...
