Summed up, these enrich personal growth they said and adds joy to living. Mrs. McCotter and Mrs. Gard ner showed slides taken while on a tour of Denmark and Norway during the summer, showing that travel is a means of per sonal growth and adds to the per sonal growth of all who viewed the beautiful scenery and land marks of these countries. They also gave an account of their trip to the area of “Hie Land of the Midnight Sun.’’ Letters were read and enjoyed by the group from Mrs. William Fitch, a member who is now in Japan and Omar Rodriquez, their foster child in Peru; Mr. Joseph Dennis, Librarian at Marshall and Bangert schools; Mr. George Brinson, superinten dent of Pamlico County Schools, expressing appreciation to the Society for copies of a book per taining to early Indian life in North Carolina. The book was placed in the elementary schools of Craven and Pamlico counties and in New Bern City Schools by the group in observance of the publishing Bicentennial. Hostesses for the meeting and in charge of the luncheon served from beautifully decorated tables were Mrs. Preston Banks, chairman; Mrs. Drew Dixon, Mrs. John Duffy, Miss Margaret Fischel and Mrs. Nat Gooding. The February meeting will be a luncheon at Minnesott Beach with members from Pamlico County serving as hostesses. Run Away... Continued Fma Page 1 study conducted for HEW last year. “The nature of con temporary social conditions in America, and especially urban America, are such that the survival options of the young runaways are extremely limited. Fear of discovery, shortage of money, food and shelter unavailability of jobs and so on, often force the young person into situations of gross exploitation or victimization. Street hustles, such as drug selling, stealing, prostitution, panhandling, and exchange of sexual favor for shelter or food are described as part of the street scene. Hunger, malnutrition, drug abuse, ex ploitation, and victimization are now seen as characteristic of this segment of American life. The foul revelations of the killing of 27 young transients from Houston, Texas in 1973-74 brought home to many people the dangers to which such young persons woe exposed.” At least SO Jaycee chapters across North Carolina are participating in Operation Peace of Mind during this fiscal year. Hie purpose of the project is to acquaint North Carolina’s youngsters and others to/ttto state who might have runpway from other states about the availability of the Texas based toll-free hotline through the use of a massive public awareness The Houston tragedy and the thousands of calls coming into the Governor’s office prompted Texas Governor, Dolph Briscoe, to establish a nationwide toll free hotline for runaway jun veniles in September 1973. This project is celled Operation Peace of Mind and ruiuiwsy? anywhere in the country can call 1-800-231-9949. It will be kept confidential and their message will be relayed to their parents. Many times those messages an used just to 13t parents know that they are alive and well. In many cases, however, , children an reunited with their parents through this effort. Fish Is Norwegian Daily Diet Fish is almost a national sym bol and figures prominently in the Norwegian’s daily diet. High on the list of all-time fish favorites is smoky Norway sar dine, still processed by a cen turies old method developed by the vikings. These special sar dines are lightly smoked over slow burning oak embers before being gently hand-packed and processed. The savory fish then matures, like good wine, getting more flavorful and mellow with age. A special plus for the rich and tender sardine from Norway is that it keeps well in its own little tin on your emergency party shelf. When unexpected guests drop in, simply open the sar dines and serve with crisp rye crackers and a favorite beverage. You can enjoy those special pre-planned parties, too, when sardines do half the work. They’re great with many every day items such as potato chips, crisp vegetables, crackers, toast and cheese. Although nutrition may not be uppermost in your mind when planning a party, it’s nice to know that Norway sardines con tribute good amounts of nutri tion. One three-ounce serving of Norway sardines will provide 40 percent of the U. S. Recommend ed Daily Allowance of protein about the same as a three-ounce hamburger patty. That same serving will contribute 100 per cent of the vitamin D and B12,30 percent of the calcium, niacin and phosphorus and 10 percent of the riboflavin and magnesium recommended daily. For a spectacular first course that would satisfy any Norwegian, combine this special little fish with the savory goodness of cohiles and pimien toes; add the rich tangy flavor of sour cream and chiles and pi mientoes; add the rich tangy flavor of sour cream and layer between 24 (count ‘em) tender crepes. The mellow richness of this golden tower makes it a great cocktail party or open house specialty that invites sampling and re-sampling. And, a hostess-saving plus—it can be assembled the night before and chilled (well covered) until serv ing time. The silvery sardine garnish is added at the last mo ment. Also, if the party isn’t at your house, this is one hors d’ oeuvre that’s easily transported. For The Goon Tines o!
