In And Around Oriental By Mrs. G.P. Midyette Flrat Baptist Service The topic of the pastor’s ser mon in the First Baptist Church on the first Sunday in February was, “The Name of the Game is People.” Rev. Oliver took his text from Matthew 17:1-8 which covers the story of the Transfiguration of Christ with Moses and Elijah on earth. When Peter, James and John said, “It is good for us to be here,” and of fered to build three booths, one for each, then hearing the voice from the cloud saying, “This is my beloved son with whom 1 am well pleased. Hear ye Him.” The speaker declared that Moses and Elijah were symbolic of all people who will see Jesus at his second coming. He refer red to Martin Luther when he brought out to the world the sacrifices of Jesus for people, declaring that the name of the game is people; that we shouldspread God’s love to peo ple. The special music was a solo sung by the pastor, “My Task.” He called attention to a paragraph from his church bulletin as follows: “The greatest libel ever perpetuated against God is the notion that he likes to see men express obe dience to Him through somber, long faced, mirthless piety. The Bible teaches that the true hallmark of religion is joy. A careful count reveals that the word “joy” is found in the Bible 164 times, while the verb, “re joice" appears 191 times. So let us serve with joy and gladness and rejoice in His salvation. The underlying theme of the message was “Love.” W. M. U. Met The women of First Baptist Church met with Mrs. Inez S. Hargrove in her home on Mon day. The study was concerned with the young people’s mis sionary organizations of the Church Mission Friends, girls in action. The topic of the study was “Minding the Future.” Ten members were present and en joyed the home made lime pie and hot coffee served by the hostess. Exploring Trip After luncheon on Sunday afternoon Irma Midyette and Nina Dixon went exploring around Sea Vista and Whitaker’s Creek Yacht Harbor and Marina. They called at the store, visiting with the Fordhams and the Hubbards, both of whom are yacht dwellers and own and operate the store there. Both couples seemed to befery fine people and are certain to be fine citizens. Bridget Hubbard is one of the four new members in ducted into the Junior Woman’s Club on Monday night night. Rotary Club Met The Rotary Club was back in the Free Will Baptist Educa tional Building for its regular meeting on Monday night, February 7. President Mike Murray presided. Connors Have 44th Anniversary Jack and Lena Connor celebrated their 44th wedding anniversary on Monday. A nephew and his wife from Dover brought a lovely cake. Other relatives and friends sent gifts which were, of course, very much appreciated by the Con nors. In fact j Caswell helped him so mcuh that ! he left the Center in August and j is now about to be discharged. ‘ Ralph came here an in adeguate home in 1970 when he was six. His father drank too much alcohol and his mother was rather dull mentally. The child did not receive stimulation. He had difficulty forming rela tionships with people. He seldom spoke. He spent six years at Caswell. Social workers, a psychologist, teachers and health care workers worked with him. Then the interdisciplinary team in his division decided that he was ready to return to the more nor mal experience of community living. But was the community ready for Ralph? We do not discharge residents unless we can find something that meets their needs better than Caswell does. A social worker got busy. Community agencies worked with Caswell. According to Hilton Hartley, some of their customers were under the im pression that the sales room has been closed. He would like to correct this by letting everyone know that the sales and display building along with its contents was left intact by the fire. The smoke and fire damaged mer chandise was that stored in a smaller building adjacent to Hartley’s Carpetland main show room and office building.
