Engagement Announced Miss Cheryl Diane Willis is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Franklin T. Willis of Alliance, who announce her engagement to J. E. Hardison Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Eldon Hardison of Bavboro. The wedding will take place on November 12. Ruritans Hold Successful Barbecue By June Lane The Goose Creek Island Ruritan Club held a barbecue dinner Saturday, Aug. 13. It was a great success. The funds are to be used to improve the rest room facilities at their meeting place. It seems that all func tions the Goose Creek Island Ruritans hold are well attended, a fine group, working well together, for the improvement of Goose Creek Island. — Announce Birth — Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cowden of Stonewall announce the birth of a daughter on Saturday, July 13 at 2:15 a m. at Craven County Hospital. The little girl weighed 6 pounds 13 ounces. Mrs. Cowden is the former Elaine Gatlin of Pamlico County. Alim, M. C Over 100 Guests Miss Cheryl Thompson was home from Fairfax, Va. for a few days recently. While here she helped celebrate her father's birthday at a pig picking where more than a hundred guests were present. Cheryl is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Thompson. She has been teach ing school and coaching in Virginia for several years. This was the first time she had been able to join the family for its third annual pig picking. On Sunday night Cheryl took her family and several friends in her new Dodge van to Bath to see the pageant, “Blackbeard, The Knight of the Black Flag.” Accompanying her were Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. John Bond, Mrs. Irma Midyette, Susan Thompson and Carolyn Holton. Church Services Sunday School and Sunday morning services were held at all four churches here, the Methodist, Holiness, Free Will Baptist and First Baptist. Dan Ensley brought the morning message at First Baptist in the place of the pastor who was on vacation. Dan is a ministerial student at Campbell College and is a native of Oriental. His church family and friends are very proud of the progress he is making. Baptist Women Met The women of the First Baptist Church met with Mrs. Lucy Gilgo for their regularly monthly meeting with five members present. Home Missions program that was concerned with Spanish speaking people in America, the group called on a member who was unable to be present be cause her mother was ill. They carried watermelon to cut and enjoy with the Ensley family. Watermelon Cutting The annual watermelon cut ting was held August 14 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Bond overlooking Neuse River at the cove. The annual com munity affair was greatly enjoy ed by all. Civil Preparedness Agency To Host Safety Seminar The Civil Preparedness Agency of Carteret County is hosting a Safety Seminar on Saturday, Aug. 20. The seminar will begin at 9:00 a.m. and end at 3:00 p.m. It will be conducted at Carteret Technical Institute in Morehead City. The seminar is designed to Mistaken Identity Emery Lauton is a boy, not a girl, as was incorrectly stated in last week’s edition that featured some of the school children enjoying the last of their sum mer vacation. It seems that these days, with boys wearing their hair long and girls wearing theirs short, it might pay to ask if one is a boy or a girl. There is also a very vital session on the latest require ments on the labeling of trucks engaged in transporting toxic chemicals. All fire, law enforcement and rescue personnel from the counties of Carteret, Craven, Jones, Onslow and Pamlico are invited to attend. There will be no charge for this very important session. With all of the chemicals plying our highways today, it is imperative that our emergency services personnel know the proper steps to take in the event of a chemical spill.
