(Continued from page one) Chamber Of Commerce people who live on the road and the public hearing will be for them and other people who travel the road. Mr. Boyer said that a memorandum had been received from DOT Secretary Thomas Bradshaw that asked for a planning process in the various districts to make known to DOT what the needs are. He thought the Chamber or the County Commissioners con sider a steering committee in order to have an orderly transportation plan over a five year period. Mr. Thomas agreed that this was a good idte and said the next regional meeting on road needs will be in Kinston on May 30. The recent meeting held in New Bern addressed airport needs, as well as other forms of transportation. When Mr. Boyer informed him that the County is also interested in an airport facility, Mr. Thomas said that the County should get its comments to Raleigh. Funds are given out every month for airstrips and airports. Ross Boyer was instructed to draw up a resolution concerning the ferry and to get information concerning an airfield to DOT. John Bond, speaking for Lee Whorton, Mayor of Bayboro, and other interested citizens, told Mr. Thomas that there is a severe traffic problem during certain hours of the day in the area from the Stonewall School to the Shopping Center in Alliance, and that construction of pull-off lanes would help. Charles McCotter said that as the boating season gets closer, the problem gets greater with the number of boats and trailers going through on that section of NC 55. Mr. Snell said lie would look into it and that perhaps urban funds could be used since the area is all within town limits. Probably the most thrilling event, for young and old alike, in the April 22 and 23 program of Civil War life at Fort Macon was the exact re-enactment of the execution of a Union spy. Other events in the 2-day program were Confederate soldiers drilling, the men eating as they would have over 100 years ago, and skirmishes with Union soliers.
