F. Howell, social security district manager in New Bern. Some 4.2 million people are now receiving SSI. In fiscal *1960 payments totaled about $7.5 billion, including $5.7 billion in federal funds and $1.8 billion in state funds. The SSI Program is a federally-administered program that provides a basic cash income to people in financial need who are 65 or older, blind, or disabled. Currently, SSI provides up to $238 for one person and $357 for an eligible couple in monthly benefits. “Everyone that qualified for SSI will not receive that amount,” Mr. Howell said. “Some may get less because they have other income, while some may get more if they live in a state that adds money to' the federal payment.” SSI is not the same as Social Security, even though the program is administered bv the Social Security Ad T~ <*w?r til i % \MAKt?
