Rape Assistance Program Offering Help As the summer months ap proach, many area residents are busy with vacation plans and recreational activities, but there is a potential danger that many do not consider. The Neuse-Trent Rape Assistance Program advises area, residents that the upcoming mon ths are also the busiest months for crimes involving rape and sexual assault. Operating under the auspices of the Craven County Council on Women, the program provided crisis intervention and assistance to 67 victims and their families last year and expects a sharp in crease in the calls for assistance to begin soon. “More assaults occur during the months of June through September than the rest of the year,” explained Beverly Moore, rape program manager. She con tinued on to say that the reasons behind the increases include: the longer daylight hours; more peo ple, such as students, being out and available; more alcohol being consumed; less clothing being worn; and the heat bringing out short tempers. ‘‘Services provided to victims range from assistance through the Crisis Line, emergency room companions and emergency clothing and shelter as a result of the assault to courtroom ad vocates providing emotional practical support during prosecu tion,” she states. Prevention is the best weapon, according to Moore. ‘‘Often weapons such as knives, guns or mace are taken away from the victim and used on her,” she stressed. ‘‘The result is often more physical and emotional danger.” Delicious uessens, ieu ui wn«« All For Only $5.00 Served from 11:00 am until 2:00 pm bu Choice i IL Sunday Lynch Special Shrimp or Ribeye Steak Ice of two vegetables, hushpuppies or hot biscuits, dessert, tea or coffee $5.00 NIGHTLY SPECIALS MONDAY.Spaghetti.$3.25 Served with Salad bar and Texas Toast TUESDAY.Bill Of Fare. The courtesy kits provide needed items of clothing and cleansing supplies to be used by a victim after the medical ex amination. Other services include emergency shelter, food and transportation. All services, referrals and assistance are provided free of charge, according to Moore. Educational programs are also available on awareness regarding the crime and its prevention and services of the program. “June is Rape Prevention Month and recognized locally and nationally,” Moore stated. “Many people view rape and sexual assault as a women’s issue but in reality it is a community pro blem.” The arrest and prosecu tion of a rapist comes out of everyone’s pocket as well as all the medical and support services required by the victim and her family. “Anyone speaking to the husband, father, brother or boyfriend of a rape victim will soon understand the impact of the crime and how far-reaching the effects of the crime extend,” she said. Rape has the ripple effect that reaches into classrooms, workforce and homes.
