Tgg nniQCIMANS WESZLT, HERTFORD, M. CL, FRIDAY MARCH 15, 1935. PAGE FIVE f - 1 .!' ''M " H. 'I' .' Klin i i in 'Certificate Of Birth Given To Governor Governor John Christopher Bloeher JUinnghaua, jdi ; .North Carolina Was presented Tuesday with a certificate of his birth .more than half a ceriturj ago by Dr. Carl V. Reynolds, acting State health officer and secretary a the State Board of Health. . , ' Dr. Reynolds -, related briefly the 4 v achievements of Burhnnlr with, nlant- nd of biologists in producing spec) mens approaching prefection. He con gratulated . Governor; Ehringhaus or Ids parents and the excellent epeciman of manhood they produced in him a' 'lie presented the ; little copy of the Governor's "citizenship papers." "I thank you, Dr." Reynolds, and ap. predate this evidence - that ' I wa; born,", said Governor Ehringhaus "'Your campaign should ' have the hearty .and lull cooperation of the citizens of the State. Children now will live to 'appreciate the care theii parents 'exercise now in making sun that their "births are registered. I appreciate mine." - Governor TEhrlngtiaus, the certifi cate he proudly displayed, shows, was born in Elizabeth City, N. C, Febru ary 5, 1882, the son of Erskine and Carrie Cdlvffle .(Mathews) Ehring- -teus. , His father was 28 and his mother T25 years old when he was born. He -was born "without benefit of bookkeeping," as births were not required by law to be registered un til 1914. His mother had died, as had the v attending physician, Dr. W. L. tiumsden.. . Only his father. Erskine Ehrinir 1?3u3jJw approaching his 82nd birth annivf rsary, is living, of those whose wer.; b to the birth would be accept ed wi. tout Question. The father has beetT'Tflck, but was again about his duties a few days ago. Certainly withm a few years, at most, the father would-not have been here tc make out a certificate of birth for the 'Governor of North Carolina and much trouble would have been ex perienced to establish that fact ,xne ceruncate was presented as a feature of the "Register Your Baby" campaign now about to end in North Carolina, conducted by the Bureau of the Census, State Board of Health and State ERA. Most Small Grain Needs Top-Dressing Seven out of every ten of the 800. 000 acres of small grain now growing j- in North Carolina will benefit from a ' ' drenainff f ' nricltlv nvnilnht irogen fertiliser. .'. ; ' 2"On thiaJbasis,. there ware. at. least 0,000 acres ; of small r grain that should be top-dressed ,' this spring." says W . H. Rankin, agronomist in soil fertility at the North Carolina Ex periment Station. "Our studies show that the average yield of wheat, pei acre in North Carolina for 1934 wa? only 10 bushels. The average ryield of oats-was 17 bushels; of rye,7.5 bushels, and of barley, XJ bushel These are low acre yields and should . be improved. They may be increaaea , I. by the application of such quick-act ing-nitrogen fertiliser as nitrate of soda or sulphate of ammonia The usual appUcatlon;'. an mcra.'t', iV &'$ityj-ft Rankin points out that the addition of 20 pounds of nitrogen in the form of a top-dresser, will cost about $1.50 per acre. . It wilr require 11-2 bushel V '-. of wheat to pay for this nitrogen and TJ( it Is not unusual for w appUcatioiof. iuu pounos oi nitrate oi-sooa, or its equivalent to; increase the" acre yield from 25 to 50 percent. Apply the top dressing material af ter freezing weather is over and the grain begins to make spring growth. While too early ' an application may hurt the grain should growth be stim ulated and lata" frosts occur, . still most nitrogen top-dressings ' are ap plied too late to be of most benefit. ' The most desirable time is from March 1 to 15 in the Piedmont section ': .and from March 10 to 25 in the mountains, Rankin says . -. , s . Dates Set For avili, .
