John 3:16. IT IS UP TO TOWN OFFICERS Some drastic steps should be taken, and taken at once, by the officials of the Town of Hertford to check the excessive speeding of automobile drivers on the streets of Hertford. Speeding is the order of the day in the Town of Hertford. The new thirty-foot highway through the town has been opened for the convenience of the traveling public. Speed-mad drivers seem to have taken the .m provement as an invitation to faster driving. Coming into Hertford over the Perquimans River bridge, driv ers of cars in many instances sweep around the curve in Church street at a terrific rate of speed. In spite of the adequate width of the street, these speeders menace the safety of the residents of the west side of the street in driving from their premises. Nobocfy familiar with this section of the town will deny the truth of these statements. The rate of speed at which cars are often driven in this section of the town io a menace to persons crossing the street, particu larly so to children. It has been suggested that private citizens witnessing the violat' in,, of the law should report the matter to the authorities and swear out war rants themselves. The private citi zen knows that it is the business of the police officers to report these violations. Why shouldn't the police of the Town of Hertford include this sec tion of the town in their beat and make investigation of this situation? It would be a great deal easier to remedy this situation now, before it becomes established in the minds of these speeders that the wide street is a Bpeedway. The speeders are not going to slow down unless they are made to d Ko. On the contrary, they will -mue to increase their speed rate Now is tne time for the officers to stop this excessive speeding! JUDGE OAKEY TAKES DECIDED STAND Judge Walter H. Oakey, Jr., has served notice that he expects to pro tect, in so far as his official position permits, the Perquimans County pub lic from the drunken driver. In no uncertain terms Judge Oakey stated in open court on Tuesday that no one convicted in his court of driving an automobile while under the influence of intoxicants will be let off with a fine. No matter who it is so convicted, a jail sentence will be invoked. This is well. If all the judges in the State of North Carolina had the courage to make Ifcis decision and stand by it, drunken drivers Would not be so numerous and there would be a decrease in the slaugh ter of human beings on our high ways. When a man knows the penalty foi driving an automobile while drunk is a term in jail and that he cannot pay his way out with a fine, he is apt to abstain from taking a :lrnk and the wheel of a car at the same time. Judge Oakey's stand is a challenge to every judge in the State of North Carolina. LET'S PLANT CREPE MYRTLE AND DOGWOOD The broad highway through the Town of Hertford is completed. The construction "force did a good job. - But it remains for the citizens of the Town-of Hertford to take steps which will add immeasurably to the attrac tiveness of the town. ' To" plant' crepe myrtle and dogwood trees alternately in the space between ' sidewalk and street would be to make of this wide thoroughfare a thing of beauty, which, we are told, is a "joy forever." , . , ' jFifty-on'e Watauga county . sheep "'growers shipped 378 fembs to the " Jersey City market .last , week-where 'a majority, of the animals, .graded , "choice" or',Vood'!,; Hot, weather, folfow"iug( the recent rains, t . has caused ", tobaqcc;':'"to rir niore rapidly than" the growers c-n fnd barn rooniof soSringr, the Paving Of Causeway: Puzzling To Engineers r (Continued from Page One) . experience of going down to the river as a child to watch the circus come to town. There .was - no rail road through thle section then, in I860, and indeed not until more than a decade. . later, v The circus came through the country mad. The old lady related that when the keepers attempted: to drive the elephants on the ferry , they refused to go on. Try as they might, the keepers could not induce the big animals to step upon the f rail ferry. To the great delight of the children, the . elephants were finally .allowed to swim the river, landing on the Hertford side close enough for the children to witness the exciting incident iv The road through the causeway and the float bridge must have been a great convenience. To be sure, the tide' came in sometimes and covered the road. When a resident of Dur anta Neck or of Nicanor or Belvidere droe into town in the morning oh a perfectly good road, he wasn't at all certain that when he started home in the afternoon the road would not be inundated. When that happened, however, the horse just splashed its ay through without any trouble, and the pedestrians walked on the very convenient elevated footway be side the road. The causeway road has always been a problem. It is probably for ever solved. Certainly, it appears to have a solid foundation now, and the broad hard surfaced highway is a great improvement over the rough and muddy road which years ago met the old float bridge. The modern steel and concrete bridge built six years ago across the river is an appropriate link between the beautiful causeway road and the streets of Hertford.
