It is especially (ginned to put trees on Dobb Street, where a number were removed when !the street was paved this summer, and the purpose of the committee is to plant crepe myrtle and mimosa trees. Not only will these trees be effective in beautifying the street, but they will not grow tall enough to interfere with the electric wires. Health Official Warns Against Insect Menace "Insects spread diseases in two general ways, biologically and me chanically," -reports Louis Weiner, vital statistician of the New York City Department of Health. "If a period of incubation in the insect is necessary before the parasite can be transmitted, the method is spoken of as biological transmission. . Yellow fever is an example of this. So is malaria, which is spread by a differ ent type of mosquito. If on the other hand, insects convey infection at once without a period of incuba tion m the insect, the transfer u a mechanical one. The ordinary house fly can transfer typhoid fever me chanically. Typhus fever is trans mined by body lice. Insects transfer infections me chanically .in a variety of ways The mouth parts, legs, or outer surface of the body may be smeared with the virus which is carried to the food, fingers or lips of humans. The virus may remain attached to the proboscis of a biting insect and transferred as by a hypodermic needle. Another way for the virus to gain admittance is through a wound caused by an in sect, or scratched in by an individual- "All that has been said so far is very good reason for the extermina tion of mosquitoes, .flies, : rats and lice. To these should be added 1ed- ougs and roaches. . The bedbug is under suspicion as the carrier of many infections, although nothing has' actually been pinned on it" con tinues' Mr. Weiner. ; "From what is known about the transmission of dis ease, it is possible that the bedbug does transmit some infection or oth er. The same holds true of roaches. Roaches are among the most offen sive of insects whicht frequent human habitations. They feed on cereal r.d food products of all sorts. Because of this they are in position to trans mit disease by mechanical means. All these vermin and insects are: an., of fense against sanitary; decency, be sides being a menace to health, and they should be exterminated if pos sible, or at least kept muter control The most - effective; measures . are those which J strike at, their breeding places."
