THIS WEEK'S BIBLE THOUGHT THE NAEEOW NATIONALIST REBUKED: Of a truth I perceive that God is no respector of persons; but in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness is accepted with him. Acts 10:34-35. AN EDITORIAL By WRIGHT PATTERSON In The Publishers' Auxiliary It takes something more than the mere printing of town and commun ity gossip on which to build news paper prestige, and with which to inspire confidence on the part of the public. The newspaper must have a policy; it must do things; it must have nip ions and not be afraid to express them; it must lead in community betterments, and it mast provide in formation on local, national and world events so its readers may form their opinions. This matter of policy cannot be a thing that is evidenced only occa sionally or at intervals. It must be continuous, week after week, year after year. To acquire .and retain prestige and to inspire confidence with its read ers, the newspaper must respect the rights of its readers. It must de liver to the readers week after week those thirds for which they have paid a subscription price. When they are "short weighted" they will do just what they would do if treated the same way by any merchant go elsewhere to do their buying. The newspaper that does not at all times respect the rights of its subscribers will not only lose in prestige and confidence, but it will lose subscriber customers. All of the people may not always agree with the policy followed by the newspaper, ' but they will respect it for having a policy. Politically the newspaper need not be partisan. It can be Democratic or Republican, Independent or neu tral, but it cannot be neutral on community, affairs and community projects. To acquire and retain prestige and to inspire confidence with its read ers, the newspaper must print regu larly such things as the public de mand and have a right to expect in the newspaper they buy. Prestige and confidence are the greatest assets of any newspaper. Without these no newspaper can achieve anything like a maximum of success. Printing only the town and community gossip will not create prestige or inspire conjdence. HIT OR MISS fr,&ofr$ , "Because they didn't have an add ing machine out here," said Z. A. Harris, when, somebody wanted to know at the basketball game on frriday night why Prue Newby hadn't been put in the game before. Prve was put in during the last half of the third quarter and shot 26 goals during the time she played. Five Saturdays in February this year! And it is the Jrst time there have been five Saturday in the month of February in 60 years. Judge Walter H. Oakey, Jr., just doesn't hold with cheating, and some how the old adage that "there is honor even among thieves," didn't seem to hold good in the light of the evidence in a case which came up in Recorder's Court on Tuesday. The two defendants, Clarence Pem berton and Clarence Edward Sharp, both", colored, were identified as. rthe fellows who were picked up Sunday daring the hour of church service as one chased - the other through the streets with brick bats and a knife. Evidence disclosed that the two boys had framed up on the other participants in the card game and then had fallen out over the division of the net returns. Each drew 90 days on the roads upon - conviction of the charge of assault with a deadly weapon,, but it is doubtful whether the Judgment was meant by his honor to be punish ment for the scrap so much as for cheating. , "The "devil jest fooled me, sir," was the answer of William White, colored defendant In Recorder's AWARDED CORN CLUB PRIZES A yield -of 119 bushels of corn pro duced at a cost of $29.65 on his club acre, has brought to John Reno of Haywood County, the State cham pionship in 4-H corn club work and won for him a one-year scholarship to State College offered by the Bar ret Company, announces L. Williams had plead guilty, and there had been evidence to show that William took eight large hens and one small rooster with a long tail from the hen house of his neighbor, Garfield Lilly. The explanation did not seem to satisfy Judge Oakey, who sentenced William to sixty days on the roads.
