At .least, that is the only explanation advanced as yet for the stepping out of Tom and Pete, the two young mules belonging to Oliver J-ayden, Perquimans County farmer, on last Friday night. It is possible that the young mules confined in the stabies for many tire some weeks, had grown weary of the long winter. Maybe they were only on a lark. Snow was falling thick and fast that night when the mules broke from their stalls and started on a journey. Reaching the track of the Norfolk Southern Railroad, which runs near the farm, they headed south and traveled some miles before calamity overtook them. It could hardly be said to have over taken them, at that, as they met their fate head on. The red eye glaring through the falling snow seemed to the mules hardly less malevolent than the screeching whistle of the locomotive as it bore down upon the youthful adventurers: and in less time than it took to sound a frightened, snort, the on-coming monster, the freight train which makes the quickest 385 mile run in the whole Southland, was upon them. Tom was flung far afield on the right, while Pete, neatly caught up by ihe menacing cow catcher, was hurled violently to the left . Next morning the mangled bodies of the mangled victims were found by their owner. SEEDS SEEDS LET US SUPPLY YOU WITH THE SEEDS FOR YOUR SPRING PLANTING I Hertford Hardware & Supply Co.
