Perquimans Weekly is pleased to learn of the existence in Hertford of an organization of young Negro men known as the Young Men's Pro gressive dub. The organization, which is some thing more than a year old, has for its objective better citizenship and community pride. That nine of the eleven members of the club are graduates of the Hertford colored school is significant. Not a very high- percentage of our Negroes pursu their- education to graduation, and few probably of those who have finished the course at the Hertford High School have re mained at home. But among these there is this group of young men who have banded themselves togeth er in an organization of this charac ter. The kind of training which devel ops this type of citizen is the,, kind of training our young people, both white and colored, need. With a little encouragement and help from the citizens of the town, this young Negro organization may exert an influence on other young men of their race which will be of inestimable value. THE LAST ONE! A little boy held fast to his moth er's hand and watched the laying of the cornerstone of the Hertford Bap tist Church on a bright spring day a long long time ago, eighty-two years, to be exact. Of all the company present on that occasion, William Mardre, who stood that day at his mother's side, is the only one left to attend the eighty-second anniversary of the church which will be observed next Sunday.;,., , ' vj, V... With so many stores in Hertford making improvements and dressing up, the town is beginning to look prosperous. It has often been said that the stores in Hertford were bet ter looking stores than are found generally in much larger towns. The new department at Blanchard's on the second floor looks like a city place. W. M. Morgan Is making over his store almost entirely, and it is going to be a fine looking place when it is finished. Simon's Store of Values was re cently remodeled, and he is still making improvements, just now put ting ia some new lighting eiiects. There isn't an unattractive looking place in the business district, and there isn't a single vacant store in the Town of Hertford, and hasn't been for months I wish I were a little rock, a settin' on a hill, A-doin' nothin' all day long but just a-settin' still! I wouldn't eat, I wouldn't think, 1 wouldn't even wash! I would set and set a thousand years, and res myself by goshJ . ' ' ' Selected. Birthday Party For Mrs. J. N. Winslow Mrs. J. N. Winslow, whose 78th birthday occurred on Sunday, was honored with a delightful birthday dinner, given at the home of her daughter, Mrs. D. J. Rogerson, at Beech Spring. The honoree received many beauti ful and useful gifts. M 0 T 0 C E !.
