DESTRUCTION TO HIGHWAYS
Not only the , roads of the Roa
noke-Chowan section, but those all
over .the country, have fared badly in
the last year or more under tha ter
rific punishment of ' the monstrous
trucks that have 'almost taken pos
session of them. : i , j ?
Particularly ' during the pasfc iaw
months, when, unusual winter condi
tions prevailed, have our roads been
torn up unmercifully. The .roads
were designed and built for Automo
bile traffic. They were never design
ed or built as runways for trucks as
big as railroad freight cars and a
bout as heavy. Nothing but steel
rails can stand such weight, without
going to pieces.
The truck operators, . ever after
bigger loads, more tonnage at a haul,
kept on making the trucks bigger,
wider, higher, longer, heavier, and
kept on adding more and more tons
per load. They have about gotten to
the point now that they consider the
roads theirs, and woe unto any mere
automobile driver who does not give
them all the road they want, which
is all too often more than half.
It is manifestly unfair to force
the taxpayers and automobile own
ers to keep on paying to provide and
maintain roads to be used by these
behemoths of the highways who tear
these road beds down and endanger
the lives of every motorist on the
road. There most certainly should
be a limit to the weight and loads
carried, and some limitation to the
length of the track and trailer con
traptions that slither along at a
mile a minute clip carrying tons of
weight that should be routed over
the railroads. The Hertford County
Herald.
