Answer: Where green feed is not nvnilfthle. a balanced laying mash (reinforced with a potent fish oil should be kept before the birds at all times. The addition of from 5 to 7 percent of alfalfa leaf meal will, in most cases, provide ample insurance for the lack of this green feed. Where possible, dehydrated alfalfa leaf meal should be used, me use of this leaf meal and a good laying mash should keep the birds in a good, healthy, laying condition. Question: Does altitude make any difference in the time of processing in canning fruits and vegetables? Answer: Yes. Water boils at ap proximately two degrees lower for every 1,000 feet above sea level and it is necessary, therefore, to cook products longer in high altitudes, as the lower temperatures will not ster ilize as readily as the sea level boil ing point. A table showing the proper processing time for the higher alti tudes is eiven in Extension Miscel laneous Pamphlet No. 39, a copy of which will be sent free upon apphca tion to the Agricultural Editor at State College. Answer: Seed potatoes should be selected at harvest time. Go through the field just before general digging and dig separately a large number of hills, keeping the potatoes of each hill to themselves. Select the seed potatoes from those hills having the largest number of uniform tubers that are typical of the variety. Se lection of the seed potatoes from the stored crop gives no assurance of good yields nor freedom from disease. 12:00" o'clock. Noon, at the Court House door of Perquimans County, N. Specialists To Tell Of Summer Practices Now that rains have broken drought conditions over a large -por tion of the State, farmers are re doubling their efforts to produce a crop this year. Realizing this, extension Special ists who are to appear on the Garo lina Farm Features radio program this week will place particular em' phasis on the proper procedures to be following to secure the largest possible yields. Drought seriously affected most crops and before rains fell, the agricultural situation look ed gloomy. Tobacco and cotton, the two larg est cash crops in North Carolina, probably suffered the greatest set backs. Fanners, now far behind in their cultivation of these two crops, are having to work rapidly to pro dure even a fair-sized crop. According to specialists of the Ex tension Service, crop conditions in the Coastal Plain section look much better than those in the Piedmont where a smaller amount of rain has fallen. The rains have also brought out green feeds, which will help livestock and poultry raisers.
