AGRICULTURE COMES INTO
ITS OWN .
Cotton picking it veil under way
in Perquimans, after a delay of
some days occasioned by the rainy
weather of last week. Great truck
loads of cotton are being hauled
daily to the plant of the Southern
Cotton Oil Company in Hertford,
where the gin is running at top
speed and the seed are being crushed
in the manufacture of oil and other
products.
Peanut digging Is also well under
way, and within the next few weeks
thousands of bags of peanuts will be
picked from the vines.
Corn and soya beans will be gath
ered later on also.
The fanners are busy, and for
many weeks there will be no such
thing as unemployment in Perqui
mans for those who can and will
Work as laborers in the harvest.
It is the busiest time of the
whole year in Perquimans. As the
.weather grows cooler every one
moves with a quicker step. Honey
begins to come into the hands of the
farmer, the first he has received, in
many instances, since he sold his
crops last felL The laborers, too, the
cotton pickers, the peanut diggers
and the men who work around the
peanut pickers, and others, chare in
the proceeds of the crops.
Trade with the merchants increas
es and business in all lines is accel
erated. New automobiles are sold,
more gas and oil are consumed, more
automobile accessories called for.
Clothing for the whole family is
purchased, and new stoves, house
hold furnishings, coal and wood,
more and better food is demanded.
Yes, this is the busy time for our
folks, the busiest and best time of
all the year in Perquimans.
Hertford, in Perquimans, is locat
ed in the midst of a fertile agricul
tural area, and agriculture has rome
into its own.
