PAGE- TWO THE PERQUIMANS WEEKLY, 1 HERTFORD, N. C. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 16, 1936. Dig Sweet potatoes Before First Frost ' ' Don't leave sweet potatoes in the r ground until frost nips jiienf,, warns L. P. Watson, extension ; horticulture ist at State College. i i J ""They are sensitive to cold and 'will be damaged by ; frosty weather, he . statedi.r.ClHniagedpotatoea. will not keep as well as those which are protected, '"t, s.. "? If an unexpected frost should kOl the vines1, he added, cut-them off and dig the potatoes at once. Watson also urged .growers to be careful not t$ bruise or cut the po tatoes 'in digging, hauling; or .stor ing. Blemishes decrease their mar ket value and increase their suscep tibility to disease.' - , ) : A', large two-horse turn plow with a rolling coulter attached to the beam and adjusted so as not to cut the potatoes is a good implement for digging. Or a "middle buster may be used if the rows are barred off. Don't throw potatoes from one row to another. Three rows may be piled together, since potatoes from the two outside rows may be laid over in the middle row without throwing. When picking up the tubers, place the different grades in separate piles. This saves trouble later. Leave the culls in the field. Allow the potatoes to remain in the field long enough for the surface to dry so that the roots will be freed from clinging soil. This also avoids carrying excess moisture into the storage house. Do not fill hampers or crates too full. Over-filled containers may cause the potatoes to be mashed or bruised in transportation or stor age. Always clean out storage houses and containers before putting in potatoes. It is also good to let the Btorage room and bassets air for a few days after they are cleaned.
