Cotton Crop Small But Good North Carolina's cotton crop, the smallest in more than 25 years, but running exceptionally high in quality, should bring farmers a bonus of ap proximately $5,000,000 in grade and staple premiums, M. G. Mann, gener al manager of the North Carolina Cotton Growers Cooperative Associa tion, has estimated. The estimate was based on the government report on grades and staples of the State crop ginned to date and on premiums being paid by the State Cotton Association on cot ton better than middling 7-8. Mr. Mann pointed out that nine out of every ten bales are running 15-16 or better in length and as such de serve a premium. "Premiums for better grades and staples," he said, "are higher now than at the opening of the season and the Cottdn Asso ciation is paying to farmers prem iums ranging as high as $12 per bale on cotton being delivered to it." Black Walnut One Of Most Valuable Trees The black walnut tree is one of the most valuable trees produced in North Carolina and will grow any where in the state, according to L. W. Anderson, Perquimans County Farm Agent. "The State Depart ment of Forestry can supply you with black walnut seedlings, one year old for one cent each," says Mr. An derson. "The seedlings are packed in bundles of twenty five and will cost only twenty five cents each. In struction for planting will be fur nished with each bundle of seedlings. They are easy to grow and may be planted in the yard, barnlot or in waste places around the farm. They grow fast when properly protected and produce nuts that are unexcelled for richness and flavor. Why not plant a few bundles of these seedlings on your farm? Leave your order at the County Agent's office in the new Agricultural Build ing or send your order by mail. The Department can also furnish other Varieties of forest tree seedlings. Borne as low as $2.00 per thousand seedlings. Forest trees will pay good dividends on idle land and we have some cultivated land that would pay better dividends if they were ' planted in trees rather than produc ing poor' crops." ly .
