-To Christmas Season
' A-Tew evergreen decorations,
'brightened with splashes of red here
and there, will help give the home
nouaay atmosphere daring the
'"vnrutmaa season.
J"You can make your own decora
'Uons if evergreens are growing in
woodlands near your home," said
'Miss Pauline' Gordon, State College
'extension specialist in home manage
ment Un most North Carolina woodlands
can be found holly, laurel, cedar,
..pine, running cedar, southern s mil ax,
! mistletoe, pine cones, spruce cones,
and many varieties of colorful ber-
irres.
iSfflwn gathering these greens, Miss
trordon cautioned, be careful not to
uproot the plants or disfigure the
trees. In places, evergreens are be
cwning scarce as a result of thought
less destruction.
nJofy is an unusually slow-grow-'
ing' tree, she added, and especial
rare should be exercised to protect
the trees. Snip off only small
branchesr ana .don't cut away, more f,
than one-fifth of the tree's leaf sur
face. Cut the branches, never break
them off. ' 1
In making decorations,1 one needs
wire for, wreath ' foundations, wire
cutters, pliers, twine, sharp knife,
and a pair of garden shears. : :
'It is necessary to have a frame to
make a wreath. It may be made of
wire and one of the evergreen vines,
such as smilax and running cedar,' or
boughs may be entwined about the
wire. Such boughs must be long and
flexible.; ;, u
Then dip ; the evergreens into
even-sized pieces and fasten them to
the frame until the entire wreath is
formed. It may then be trimmed
with pine cones, red berries, mistle
toe, cranberries, tangerines,, kum
quatSr grapes, apples, lemons, or
other bright colored objects.
