Proper ' Care Manure
Would Save Farmers
Huge Sums Annually
If all of the 8,000,000 tons of farm
manure produced in North Carolina
each year were properly cared for,
the actual value of the plant food
contained would amount to over
$12,000,000.
This would bo equal to about half
of the twenty to twenty-five millions
spent annually for commercial fer
tilizers in the State, declared W. W.
iWoodhouse, Jr., assistant agronomist
at the North Carolina Experiment
The cash value of the plant food
contained in the - manure for the
average North Carolina farm ia $43.
The total production would pro
vide for an application of more than
three tons per acre each year to
every acre planted in corn.
Research workers at the Experi
ment Station have found that in a
corn, wheat, and clover rotation an
application of three tons of manure
every three years produced an in
crease in crop production valued at
$4.78 for each ton applied above that
produced by the same amounts of
plant food from other sources.
If the entire 8,000,000 tons were
applied to this type of rotation and
the value computed on the basis of
total plant food contained plus the
value of the extra crop increase, it
would be worth over $50,000,000,
Woodhouse pointed out.
Care should be taken so that a
minimum of the plant nutrients
found in manure escapes. Barns and
lots should foe cleaned and the ma
terial applied to the fields as often as
possible. This should be spread on
the fields at once rather than placed
in piles to be spread later, the agron
omist explained.

SPORTS TALK I
i
By "WHETIE"
Hertford and Elizabeth City split a
double header on the local hardwood
on Friday night.
These two games proved to be two
of the most interesting games to be
played in this section for many a
moon.
In the opener, the Lady Indians
gave the crowd an exhibition of pas
sing and shooting that was tops and
defeated the Elizabeth City lassies
47 to 15. Nowell and Morgan led in
the scoring for the night.
The second game which featured
the Elizabeth City Yellow Jackets and
the Perquimans Indians, was by far
the most exciting. The teams were
evenly matched and both fighting for
a lead. At the end of the half the
score was 9 to in favor of the Yel
low Jackets. In the closed minutes
to play quick shots to makeetapietao
to play with the Elizabeth City quint
leading 15 to 11, the Hertford boys
dropped in two quick shots to make
the score 15 all, as the game ended,
la the extra period that was played
to break the tie the Yellow Jackets
chalked up 4 points to the Indians' 1
At the end of a most exciting game
the Jackets won 19 to 16.
Again in Weeksville on Tuesday
night the P.C.H.S. teams plit a doub
le header. But in this affair the
tables were reversed. The Lady In
dians dropped their game to the
Weeksville sextette to the score of
40 to 2.
The Perquimans Girls were not
able to match the stride of the Week
sville girls, who had no trouble taking
the game from the Hertford lassies.
In the second game the Perqui
mans boys took a close one from
Weeksville, 14 to 13.
The first half proved the Indians
way out in front but in the second
half the hard fighting Weeksville
quint continued to increase their
score and in the closing minutes the
Hertford boys had only one point
lead which they kept until the game
ended.
The game was plenty close and
gave the spectators plenty of thrills
and a good game of basketball.
A double header with Ahoakie will
be played Friday night, with the lo
cal hardwood. Both games should be
plenty good. The first game will get
under way at 7:30.
