Feed And Cover For Wildlife Is Scarce A bird in the hand may be worth tve the bush, but if there are no essuch "bushes" to provide cover mod feed for wildlife, "we may not ham any birds or other game in the bush," said H. J. Rush, biologist of uthe Soil Conservation Service. Birds have rightfully been called "friends of the farmer." Birds ask little in return for the services they render, Rush said, yet they can be of considerable assistance in producing health y dean crops, free from in reeets and noxious weeds. With-the exception of a relatively few game preserves, wildlife is con fined to farm lands and depends on them for fqod, shelter, and nesting sites. At practically no cost, and by , devoting a small amount of his time to wildlife assistance, Rush pointed out, the farmer can make havens for wildlife on fields now idle and severe- Jy eroded. "'' ', Lespedeza provides good food and cover for quail. In cutting lespedeza , Rush recommends that a small strip . be left along the side of the field or, if possible several strips throughout a large field. The farmer may disk up a broom sedge' field or any abandoned land, giving suitable wild plants a chance to grow..- By allowing wild shrubs to grow along fence rows, field borders, and in pastures, the farmer is fur nishing a permanent home for birds Rush continued, ....... .. . The farmer will receive .three-fold dividends from his investments, since birds destroy harmful insects and certain noxious weeds; they are. a source of pleasure in hunting and. may provide a source of income for the farmer who leases hunting rights and they afford personal pleasure from growing agood crop of birds. 'Green Bugs' Infest Small Grain Fields "If you find areas in your fields of small grain where the plants are turning yellow or dying, the trouble may be due to infestations of aphids or plant lice sometimes called 'green bugs. "These are small insects about the size of an ordinary pin head. They live on the grain 'over the winter and become active in the spring," said Dr. B. B. Fulton, entomologist at State College. 'The damage they do is greatest in cool weather when the spring temperatures Jare between 60 and 66 degrees Fahrenheit, he continued. , "So far a we know , nowt, . he added, "there is little we can do to check these bugs except hope for ..warmer,; weather." " t,Ac ; ' When the temperature goes above 06 degress, a ' tiny wasp begins to multiply rapidly, r The wasps sting the green bugs and lay eggs in their dead bodies. , 1 The eggs hatch into grubs that produce more wasps' which," in turn, sting more bugs to death and .after a time the green bugs disappear from the- field Dr. Fulton , pointed unt ;'. v Cool, we weather this spring has been conducive to heavy Infestations of .green bugs, he continoedi and, in some places fanners report that en , tie fields are being damaged. ,Ovhefs . report Small areas damaged herd and " are in their - fields, particularly t 'V in whlchr oats are growing.'
