Isaiah 84:4. HERE'S TO THE RIVER Never before was so much river craft seen on the Perquimans. Speed boats of various types, sail boats, row boats, launches, and even one beautiful yacht, afTof which find harbor at the end of the day in Hertford, are seen daily now on the river. Whether the present generation is more keenly aware of the possibili ties of pleasure in boating, especial ly during the hot weather when it is always cool on the water, or whether their actions merely result from having more time for pleasure than their fathers had, the young people of today are certainly taking advant age of every opportunity to enjoy the river, this summer more than ever before. Always there has been much pass age of boats up and down the river. A great deal of freight comes to Hertford by boat, particularly gaso lene and oil. Logs are towed regu larly to the mill here by tug, have been for many, many years. The river has always been important. In fact, the first settlers traveled al most entirely by bdat,' as the Indians did before them, building their homes on the river front. Fishing was al ways carried on. It has taken a long, long time, howevy, for our people to see the possibilities for pleasure on the river even to appreciate its beauty. True ther were always some who did. Al ways there was the occasional sail ing party, always there were a few boats on the vater in tha late even ing. Not so ioiig ago the river front did not attract the home bjilder in Hertford as it has done for the past twenty years or so. The prettiest and the most impos ing of the pleasure craft is the beautiful new yacht owned by Dr. C. A. Davenport. It is a fine little ship and is equipped with every gad get and contrivance for the conven ience of the skipper and hi 3 guests, and the genial doctor and his charm ing wife frequently entertain their friends, on the boat. In addition to the yacht there is a pretty little runabout owned by Charles E. Johnson and Dr. John Zachery, a launch owned by the J. C. Bh chard family, one owned by Silas M. Whedbee and another by A. R. Winfall, a sailboat belonging to William Hardcastle and one to Billy and Paul Tucker, and numerous others, to say nothing of the many rowboats. Dr. T. P. Brinn has a jaunty little motor boat which is often seen on the river, too, frequently with Mrs. Brinn at the wheel, for not only the men enjoy, the river sports, our women like them as well. It is a great privilege to live on this beautiful stream and it is good that more of us are becoming aware of its beauty and of its possibilities for pleasure. Here's to the River!
