WITH NEW SEA DRAMA All the resources of the United States Navy were loaned, it is said, -t'to Warner Bros.' for the production ' of a' thrilling: melodrama called "Submarine D-l," which opens today " at the State Theatre and is announced as the most stirring and authentic film ever made with a "tin fish" as the gobs irreverently term an under- sea boat as its subject. The movie folks journeyed to New port, R. I., to make part of it, down to Cocos Coco in the Panama Canal Zone for another, and then to San Diego for a lot more. . One of the most modern of sub . marines, the real D-l (also known as the Dolphin), was used for the pic ture. 5 Battleships, cruisers, destroy ers and the like, by the score, are to be seen in its action. It is dangerous to sell a SUBSTITUTE for 666 just to make three or four cents more.- Customers are your best assets; lose them and you lose your business. ; 666 is worth three or four times as much as a SUBSTITUTE. Dick Powell and Fred Waring are such leading figures as Ted Healy, Lee Dixon, Priscilla Lane, Rosemary Lane, Buck and Bubbles, Walter Cat Iett, Johnny Davis and Roy Atwell. Busby Berkeley, known for his ima gination end lavish production num bers in past Warner Bros, musicals, outdoes himself in "Varsity Show" . with a smashing finale that climaxes more than an hour of supreme fun and amusement. The plot of the picture deals with the efforts of Chuck Daly (Dick Powell), a Broadway producer tem porarily on his uppers, to stage the annual Quandrangle Club show at Winfield College. Daly, himself a Winfield alumnus, is induced to re turn to the college to rescue the var- jsity show from the hands of Profes sor Sylvester Biddle (Walter Catlett), and pre sentations, Daly overcomes many obstacles set before a successful production by Professor Biddle, jams members of the cast through special scholastic ex animations and then figures in a stu dent strike brought on when Biddle ousts him from the campus. The un dergraduates take matters into their own hands. The show must go on It does.
