Proverbs 27:1. "TOE CLEANEST COUNTY" "Let's make Perquimans the clean est county in the State." The sug gestion comes from Miss Gladys Hamrick, chairman of "Better Homes in America," who is leading in the clean-up campaign. Perquimans is going to cooperate in a big way with the national movement of "Better Homes Week," April 24-30. Well, why not? There seems to be no real reason why Perquimans shouldn't be clean. There appears to be a general spirit of cooperation in the movement, and if everybody wants to clean up we can have a clean county, maybe tne cleanest county. "DAFFODIL TOWN" "Daffodil Town," a visitor once dubbed Hertford upon seeing tne profusion of golden yellow blooms which grow in every garden and on many lawns of the town. Appearing nearly a month ahead of their usual appearance, some of the earliest have begun to fade, giving place to white jonquils, purple and white iris, tulips and other early flowers, but still many golden daffo dils of a later blooming strain are to be seen. They do add much to the beauty of the place. REMEMBER! Town Crier, don't forget your meeting tonight. It is to be at 8 o'clock, at the courthouse, remember. Your presence may help to make your town a better place to live in. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor: Your paper this week interested me particularly 'with its news story and editorial concerning the Town Criers. The items of which you speak as being matters of immediate interest to the Criers seem to be much to the point and I am glad to note that you support the same in your editorial. I should like, through this letter to you, to make a few remarks con cerning two of the items mentioned. Of course, I shall attempt to attend the meeting and there voice my sen timents. However, I am not opti mistic about making myself heard. Judging from the last two meetings of the Town Criers, it seems to be fairly impossible for an ordinary member to make himself heard through thevolubility of the Chair man and the noisy presence of Mes srs. Roberson and Jillson. What is meant by the Town Plan ning Committee, I cannot, of course, know to a certainty, but if by plan ning committee is meant a group of three men, more or less, who will keep steadily in mind the possibility of improvement in our town in all departments of its life, and will think out those problems and suggest solutions, and bring those solutions to the attention of the Town Crie'rs, and so to the community as a whole, IT miff. But the range of their interest should not -be limited. It should in elude, roughlysoggestions for just exactly such improvements as our worthy Mayor hs made already in opening. un the ' alley back, oz our business houses facing on Church Street, and the widening to Its origi nal .width . of . Grubb. Street between the Chevrolet Garage and Front Street. ' uj M f , ' As to the committee on ' recrea tions and sports, it does seem to me that a great deal might be done un der the chairmanship of a man of such general public interest and sym pathy with all the athletic activities of the younger generation, vis: Wayne Hefren. Could we not have during the summer, in addition to tennis and Softball, also a purely local amateur group of baseball players, having a series of games either between themselves or certain like amateur teams of neighboring towns? Nor is it too early to look forward to the fall, when we could have organized basketball, or even football, or soccer. With anyone on the committee like Dr. Zachery, there is no need to suggest that we cannot leave the Perquimans River out of account in any scheme of organized recreation. Sincerely, A. T. CRIER. Miss Gladys Hamrick, Chairman of Better Homes in America, has enlisted the aid of the home demonstration: club members all over the . county, and that group are real workers. Also, Mrs. J. G. Roberson, president of the Hertford Woman's Club, another group of workers, is organised for business and her club : women are rolling up their sleeves and getting ready for business. Mayor . Whedbee is also cooperating whole-heartedly in the movement, as well as the en tire Town Council, and the civil body of men, The Town Criers. Not only the white citirens, but the colored people are organised, and by the time "Clean-Up Week" ac tually is ushered in there will he so much preliminary work done in the way of cleaning that it will probably only be necessary in many places to make the finishing touches..
