C. f r ' N wmmgmmmm mm MONDAY ONLY APRIL 11 Maureen O'Sullivan and Robert Taylor in "A Yank at Oxford" For the second time this year, and also for only the second time since' 1923, Oxford won its annual boat race from Cambridge on the Thames Dense crowds lining the edge of the river cheered enthusiastically and ran along the bank as down the broad waterway the two crews swept in a last desperate spurt past the finishing post. Cheers greeted the result of this great world sporting event. Ox ford won by half a length. But if vou'd looked closer you would have seen a complete produc-j tion crew with two cameras in a' launch, following the shell containing Robert Taylor as the stroke of the Oxford eight. An assistant director with a megaphone directed the cheer ing and movements of the crowd on the bank. The re-enactment of the Boat Race four months before it is really due again was for the excit ing finale of "A Yank at Oxford," showing at the State Theatre Moa-i day, April 11th. The stroking of the Oxford crew! in the boat race was the culmination ' of Taylor's strict training under Ted I Phelps, thrice world sculling cham pion. Taylor first learned to row for the film in a tank and agreeably sur prised the Thames Boat Club men who formed his Oxford crew, by his clean-cut, swiit stroking down the historic course, even if he did manage to "catch a crab" on one trial sprint as he first dipped his oar. In the chill misls on an ice-cold morning Taylor and his crew left the University of London boathouse ac companied by the "Cambridge" crew and with Director Jack Conway and cameras in the launch rowed down stream for rehearsals. With final in structions from Phelps, Taylor wait ed with. his crew half a mile from the winning post. As the mists lift ed, the signal was given and the Thames waters broke into foam as Oxford and Cambridge sped up river. Cameras trained on the rival crews from close range, the crowds on the banks raced with the eights and passers-by gathered on a bridge, un wittingly added an authentic touch to the reconstruction of the famous event. Oxford won the boat race six times in all, the course having to be rowsd by the crew again and again before Director Conway was satisfied. By the end of the filming the collapse of the tired crews over their oars was genuine and no piece of film-acting. BETHEL NEWS The Y. W. A.
