HERTFORD, N. C.
Monday and Tuesday -"Hurricane"
f
Dorothy Lamour and Jon Hall as
the native sweethearts of "The Hur
ricane." The South Sea Island unit of Sam
uel Goldwyn's "The Hurricane" com
pany returned to Hollywood with
140,000 feet of film to show for 9,000
miles of location travel.
The unit had travelled to Ameri
can Samoa to film action for the
screen version of the Charles Nord-hoff-James
Normait Hall story which
comes to the State Theatre on Mon
day and Tuesday.
They didn't encounter an actual
hurricane while there, but they got a
pretty bad scare when they had a
narrow escape from a gigantic water
spout.
Goldwyn had originally planned to
film the entire production in Samoa,
' actual locale of the novel. Experi-
ment proved, however, that it was
more practical'to transport a section
of the South Seas to Hollywood than
to uproot Director John Ford and his
large cast of principals, including
Dorothy Lamour, Jon Hall, Mary
A st or, C. Aubrey Smith, Thomas
Mitchell, Raymond Massey, John
' Carradine and Jerome Cowen. The
producer compromised by sending a
camera crew to Samoa to film back-
- ground action and building a couple
of South Sea Islands on the "back
lot" of his own studio.
Eighteen technicians, under the
direction of Stuart Heisler, made the
trek to Samoa. Their location head
quarters were Pago Pago on the Is
land of Tutuila, where they enjoyed
the cooperation of the United States
Navy, governing power of the five
islands which comprise American
Samoa.

of his early experience in vaudeville.
Fred started as a juggler.
The deft way in which he creates
the impression that he is "dropping
the ball" or getting hopelessly in
volved is best demonstrated in "Sally,
Irene and Mary," 20th Century
Fox's downright uproarious musical
comedy at the State Theatre Thurs
day and Friday. Alice Faye and
Tony Martin head the cast with Fred.
Fred plays the part of a theatri
cal agent who starts out to get
three girls big jobs on Broadway.
They settle into the comparative
comfort(?) of manicure work as a
result of his big time efforts.
Again in the film Fred provides a
hilarious scene when he is dispos
sessed for non-payment of office rent.
The manner in which he continues to
do business with his office fixtures
scattered all over the sidewalk pro
vides the State Theatre audiences
with scenes that border on hysteria.
Yet every confused move has been
thought out with the utmost care by
the canny Bostonian to the intense
amusement of his thousands of admirers.

"This Nude World"
For Adults Only
Doctors claim that thousands of
patients have been restored to health
by the method of bathing their bod
ies in sunshine.
"This Nude World," which will be
presented at the State Theatre on
Wednesday for one day only takes
you on a sight-seeing trip through
an American nudist- colony. You will
be surprised at the normal activity
that takes part day in and day out.
A reporter is sent by his editor
to explore a nudist colony because
of the extreme publicity nudism has
been receiving in the newspapers and
magazines. While there he is made
a member of the colony and gath
ers his information about the sub
ject while living as a nudist.
Since the discussion of nudism has
been national and nudist camps have
sprung up all over the United States,
the picture "This Nude World," an
up-to-date all talking and splendid
acting production has been brought
to the screen at the State to show
to the public what progress has been
made in America by the nudists.
Due to the daring nature of this
photoplay, the management has de
cided to separate the audience.
Women are privileged to see the pic
ture only at matinee. Men only are
admitted at night. Only adults from
the age of 18 and over are admitted

The Standard Ford V-8, with 60-horse-power
engine, gives you a lot of car for
a little money.
300,000 new owners acclaimed the
"thrifty 60" last year. Hundreds a day
are buying it in 1938. Why?
Because it is priced low includes
essential equipment without extra
charge and goes farther between
filling stations than any Ford car
ever built. Owners all over the country
report averages of 22 to 27 miles on a
single gallon of gasoline.
But economy isn't all the story by any
means. The Standard "60" is built with
the same precision as the De Luxe "85,"
and has the same 112-inch wheelbase
chassis. It is easy to look at and ride in
as well as easy to buy and run.
There's a Ford dealer near you.

Fred Allen, radio's "Town Hall To
night' star, is twice as funny face-to-face
in "Sally, Irene and Mary."
The funniest acts on stage or
screen are those of people who ap-1
pear to be fumbling or missing their
cues. Nothing seems to appeal to
the public more than a pair of acro
bats who are trying their best to do
an intricate act but manage to step
in each other's faces.
Yet few people realize that this
type of comedy calls for an expert
performer who can do the trick the
accepted way . . . and then .has so
perfected his skill that he can
"clown" it.
Behind this skill is the secret of
Fred Allen's : great popularity on
screen and radio.
Always taking a funny story or
situation on step further so that he
appears to be confused, or at least
the butt of some one else's smarter
wit, Fred writes his own material, re
hearses, it and spots his laugh-mak-inr
sallies with the dexterity ; of an
orchestra conductor.
It may be that this knack is born
