THE JUDICIAL TEMPERAMENT Judge C. Everett Thompson wears well the dignity of his new position, and his many friends in Perquimans took pride in the manner in which the newly appointed jurist conducted the court proceedings this week. Not every man, regardless of train ing or experience, is fitted by nature to occupy the position to which Judge Thompson has been appointed, for which position he is a candidate m the Democratic primaries. Of Judge Thompson it can truly be said he possesses the judicial tern permanent, that quality of mind, con duct and bearing which arises from . 1 I i 1 - J C 1 t. a uiorougn unuwieuge. ox uic iw coupled with a supreme love of jus tice. , This rare quality, so marked in Judge Thompson, is evidenced by speech and actions controlled by rea son and ethics. J if" AFTER LETS REMOVE THOSE SIGNS Mr. and Mrs. Public are cleaning house in Perquimans. And they are doing a fine job of it, too. They say that some of the signs beside the Causeway are to be taken down. That is good. The owner of one of those signs which is helping to spoil the beauty of the Causeway was heard to say the other day that he didn't want to take his sign down, that he thought it was good advertising to have his sign out there. Maybe it is good advertising. The signs certainly are displayed plainly and prominently enough to be Been by every passer by. But is that any reason why the signs should be allowed to remain there? It might be good advertising for that man to paint a sign on the side of the house vou live in, for that matter. That would be a prom inent place, no doubt, and everybody could see. Fine for the advertiser. Such a lovely spot as that Cause way and it is a lovely spot hould not be spoiled for the thousands who pass along that road because one man, or two men, or a dozen, or even a hundred, for that matter, wish signs placed there. The beauty of that Causeway doesn't belong to any one person. If the signs which now mar the beauty of the Causeway are not re moved others will be placed there, and that right shortly. Indeed, the number has increased recently. Don't think more will not follow. It will only be a question of a little while before every tree along the way will have nailed to it a sign, the mark of some person's selfishness. Nature made that Causeway. Man has improved it. Let's see to it that nobody spoils its beauty. Let's take down those signs. I 1 One of the most attractive homes in Perquimans is that of Hon Charles Whedbee, on the corner of Punch Alley and Church Street, in Hertford. The beautiful old house, recently restored, as well as the spacious lawn and garden, where grow evergreens, flowering shrubs of many varieties, hardy perenials rich in color and choice annuals, where there is always something in bloom, is indeed a sight to gladden the eye of the beholder. This beautiful old place is one of the fine examples of reclamation. The boyhood home of Mr Whedbee, it was unoccupied for many years, during which time the house fell into ill repair and the grounds, prob ably once the pride of the owner, were sadly neglected. Two years ago Mr. Whedbee had the house restored, improving it with modern conveniences. - - The grounds, where still may be seen the largest trees of the fine old shrub known as box in Perquimans, have become, under the magic of Mrs. Whedbee's love for gardening, a scene of rare beauty. Her daffodils have faded, and the tulips and iris which just recently were so gorgeously beautiful, are giving place to roses, and there will be sweet peas and other flowers following before these are gone. Mean time there is bridal wreath, mock orange, and other flowering shrubs in bloom. The two picteures shown above are both of the Whedbee home, one taken before it was improved and one after. But no picture can do justice to the lovely and colorful garden which will increase in beauty as time goes on. ,i .' WINFALL NEWS 3u0 Strong WORTH READING Take a look at the advertisements of the local merchants in this issue and get a glimpse of the cooperative spirit every one is showing in this matter of the Clean-Up Campaign. Note the bargains, too, and take advantage of the opportunities for getting the things you need to help you carry out your part of the clean up program. SOMEBODY'S JOB And speaking of cleaning up, The Perquimans Weekly would like to know whose responsibility it is to keep clean the walks on the Court house Square. These walks are used by the people of the town generally.
