(Continued Prom" Page One) The resigning judge said that since the new recorder had been an appli cant for the position at the January resignation of Walter H." Oakey, - Jr., and whose application had beefTturn ed down by the Commissioners who appointed himself to fill the vacancy, and in view of Saturday's evidence that the people favored Mr. Tucker, he considered the fair thing to do was to step down and let the' Commission ers appoint the people's choice. . So the high position , of county judge, which has been twice resigned, in less than the course of one term, passed . on into new hands. Mr, Tucker will fill out the unexpired term and then take office again in December as an officer elected by the people. Mr. McNider did not choose to exercise his rights to ask for a run-off, automatically giving Mr. Tucker the position of high man in Saturday's election. Mr. McNider's resignation read as follows: "In view of the recent pub lic expression of the desire that Mr. Granbery Tucker serve as judge of recorder's court, and in view of my desire for harmony in our local gov ernment, I hereby tender you my. resignation as judge of the recorder's court to take effect immediately, and I take this occasion to acknowledge my gratefulness to you in the honor you conferred in your interim ap pointment of me in that capacity." J. W. Ward Breaks Record Of Presence . At Board Meetings For the first time in his six years as register of deeds, J. W. Ward has missed a meeting of the County Board of Commissioners on Monday of this week. It wasn't illness or a death in the family that prompted Mr. Ward's absence it was in order to attend the graduation exercises at Chapel Hill, where his son, Herman, receiv ed his diploma Tuesday night Mr. and Mrs. Ward left Sunday and were joined in Chapel Hill by their daughter, Miss Sara Ward, stu dent at the Woman's College, Univer sity of North Carolina, who attended the graduation exercises with her parents.
