O my soul? and why re thou disquieted within me? hope thou in God; for I shall yet praize him, who is the health of my countenance, and my God. Psalms 42. QUITE A MUDDLE With a Norfolk newspaper Sunday telling us that we may have to de tour by way of Edenton to reach the Albemarle Sound Bridge on August 25th, because of quicksand on the Yeopim Road that makes it impassa ble, with Tuesday's Daily Advance re porting that Engineer S. C. Parkins is "laughing at the quicksand myth," with a committee in Plymouth asking us for names of this county's beauty contestants that we can not supply our heads are as much awhirl as the celebration committee's. The Norfolk newspaper, evidently through an Edenton correspondent, had it that a Georgia paving com pany had thrown up its hands in dis guest and gone back to Georgia with out finishing the job, together with the further news that over in this section we may have to detour through Edenton to reach the celebra tion scene at all. Two days later (Tuesday) the resi dent engineer is laughing at the ridi culous reports, and according to the Elizabeth City paper, says that every thing is coming along just jim dandy and that the Yeopim Road (from U. S. 17 to the bridge) will be open to traffic by August 25th. Somebody is misinformed, but we understand the road is 0. K. On top of that, P. M. Arps, over in Plymouth, helping with the celebra tion plans, has asked us for the names of this county's young ladies who are nominated to enter as con testants in the beauty show. So far as we can ascertain there have been no nominations and no one is entered from this county. However, there's always a silver lining and in this instance The Per quimans Weekly notes with pleasure that Perquimans County's end of the celebration will be up to all stand ards that the town and county al lotment to the general fund is forth coming, and that a float is practically assured. These facts should put an end to rumors and statements which have it that the different committees in our county are suffocating with in action and that the "Child Enthus iasm" has aged into a scorned and decripit "Old Man Enthusiasm," hob bling his beaten and worn person out of the section. :i v . CONGRATULATIONS Congratulations to the people or Belvidere on the completion of their new community building. The new center should fill a need that every community has for a place to gather in meeting for things of public or semi-public nature. The Perquimans Weekly hopes some day. to see a well-built commun ity house in every community of the county. JTHREE YEARS AGO Three years ago the files of The Perquimans Weekly reveal that: Dr. T. P . Brinn was appointed Health Officer of Perquimans County at a called meeting of the board of Health on Monday night to fill the position made vacant by the death of Dr. George Edgar Newby, who was killed in an automobile accident on July 29. Dr. Newby had served in the position for the past 18- years. Claude B. Brinn, who had lived for the past twenty years in the Near East, was at home for a vacation, and was the guest of his brother, Rosser E4 Brinn. i -. .. . ' The tax rate of Perquimans County was unchanged by the board of Coun ty Commissioners at their meeting on Monday, when the budget for the , year was approved and adopted and the rate fixed at $1.40. Approximately 55 persons were put back to work by the local .ERA office on Wednesday, . on .projects which .were suspended on July 16. John ATevzboId, prominent Perqui mans County farmer, aged .74, r died early Saturday morning at his home, "Sunny Slope," following a paralytic stroke suffered -on -Wednesday. ' ': t: . The Name Alexin . ''The name Alexlna Is the feminine diminutive form of Alexis, which is cf Greek derivation and means help ' tr.- ' :, " ' ' Chewing the Rag' . (Continued From Page One) as to mistake Ireland for California. Can you enlighten us ! A. Well, it's this way; I could never distinguish left from right and when I -took off for California the north should have been on my right which would have faced me to the west. But not knowing right from left, how could I tell Which was north? And not knowing which was north, how could I tell east from west? Or right from left? Q. We're asking the questions, Mr. Corrigan, and now that we're both confused, how is it that your compass did not signify the' magnetic pole? A. The plane was worth only $900 what could you expect from the compass ? Q. Don't evade the issue, Mr. Corrigan, are you planning another venture soon? A. Within the next few months I expect to cross the English Channel on an ice cube powered with an old watch spring. Q. Will you accept an honorary membership in the New England Liars' Club? ' A. Who's a liar? Q. No offense, Mr. Corrigan. What do you tihink of Christopher Colum bus' hop from Portugal to the U. S. A.? ' A. He was probably heading for some other place. What was his crate worth? Speculation again furnishes the principal topic of conversation as Norma Shearer decides that her pub lic would not enjoy seeing her as Scarlett O'Hara in the movie version of "Gone With the Wind." Miss Shearer recently made her ex citing announcement (forcing the European situation into the back ground) after everyone including the producers had set their hearts on seeing her in the role . . . and soon. With her withdrawal from the cast those who acclaimed the book and are waiting impatiently for the pic ture, will probably have to wait a while longer as the powers that bo in moviedom go about selecting some one else for the part. Not that the producers care, but Wilbur and I decided Ions -ago that Miriam Hopkins is the onlv glamour star who could do the role justice. We received the news of Miss Shear er's appointment with no little dis taste in the first place.
